There is a possibility it might be the lamp, if you've never replaced it on the TV it's better you replace it. It could also be a ballast issue, it depends of how old the TV is. for example if the TV is less than a year old, that would definitely not be your bulb. Bulb for Samsung are around 110 dlls and the ballast around 80 dlls, www.discount-merchant.com?Click=48427 they have very good deals. If you're going to purchase the lamp, remember that it's best if you go with the original Philips lamp, otherwise it won't last that ling.
SOURCE: Dark Blotch on rear projection TV screen
usually these are caused by cleaning the screen with a damp cloth or fkuid rear projection tv's usually have two plastic screens separated by about quarter inch with bulbs between, one being a magnified screen.problem is,condensation can occur causing various blotches, letting the screens naturly dry out usually solves this but failing this you have to strip down and wipe them with clean dry cloth.be careful though the inside screen is very delicate.
SOURCE: Dark band on left side, Samsung HL-R5668W
the reflecting mirror is likely loose and falling down inside the light reflecting tube. you should have seen the band getting darker and larger,
the small mirror is in front of the lamp and bends the light,
remove the lamp and look down the tube (light path)
