I got my printer june 07, and a few months later it started coming up with paperjam messages when I used the photo paper, which you have to open the back, then the top etc, and only ever happened when I was trying to print a photo. Then the low on ink msg kept coming up.
Talking to someone else, they suggested that I may need new cartridges, as I had printed a few photos previously.
I didnt bother about it until after XMAS as I had a heap of photos to print.
Once I had installed the new cartridges, the low ink messages dissapeared, however I still get the same problem with the photo paper. It is the paper I bought when I got the printer, but it keeps jamming. Can print on normal paper, but photo paper just jams up.
I also have the same problem and have had it repaired by a brother authorized repair shop. It is still not feeding photo paper through. I have tried everything. I am pretty upset about this as I have always had great luck with Brother before.

yea, I got the exact same problem, with the same machine, Brother mfc 440 with the photo paper Brother supplied me. No you are not doing anything wrong, this printer is a piece of crap. It also will not run its own scanning software. I notified brother and they just told me to check the paper tray, the usual bs. it is a defective product. they did not satisfy me on bit. I will never buy antother brother product again.
I've had similar problems and solved it by putting only one piece of photo paper in cassette at a time, or better yet, put a piece of regular copy paper under the photo paper in the paper tray: My photo paper seemed to have to much friction between the sheet, as it were, becasue of the texture of the semi-glossy paper. Good luck.

You didnt tell us what phtopaper you use. Especially the weight of the paper! Brother printers are known to have probs with paper thicker then 220g. The paperfeeder cant feed the paper correctly into print position.
another reason might be that the paper isnt placed well into position. Have a look around the FAQ, too:
