My message on the computer is telling me to try a com port till it is accepted but none will recognize it. We need a patch but no one can seem to find out whidh one! My machine is 6 years old or more and my computer is 2 years old, not the one I used when I bought the machine.

I just bought a new laptop and upgraded to V.6. Since I have always used a magic box I didn't know how to attach my bernina 170 directly to the laptop. My bernina dealer said that I would first need a serial to usb adapter since my machine is old enough that it doesn't have a usb port on it. Make sure it doesn't have the screws on the serial part because they will not allow you to attach it to the machine. He also said that I may have to make a new com port as most pc laptops only show 4. I did a search of the computer and found how to make a new com port. A little more fiddleing around with the laptop and cables and restarting both then it somehow recognized that I had made a new com port. Voila. It now works. (I am a Mac person). Hope this helps. margaret

I finally figure out my problem and am up and working again. Microsoft Active Sync was reserving the Com 1 port. I simply went into the Active Sync and changed to port to Com 4. I did talk to someone at my Bernina dealer about the problem and evidently there are lots of people that have teh same type of problem if they have a Palm or phone that they connect to their computer.

I had a similar problem when connecting my Bernina 153 to the computer ("serial port is engaged"). I bought a newer USB-serial cable specifically compatible with Windows XP. I installed the cable and the included driver and connected the machine with no problem.

Please note: on the 153 (and maybe other machines?) the serial outlet has only the 9-pin section and no spaces for the side pins usually found on serial cables. You must use a cable whose side pins can be screwed back away from the outlet. The Keyspan cable recommended on some Bernina forums will not work as its side pins are fixed.

Unplug ALL plugs going into machine and only plug in the foot pettle and the electricial outlet cord

I purchased a serial port that is not compatable with my sewing machine, I also purchased an updated software with Bernina to make my embroidery machine user friendly. however,I am unable to connect

Problem is that the Bernina software you are using expects to talk to a 'COM port and the PC's USB serial interface doesn't automatically default to a COM port. Make sure you have installed the software that was delivered with your USB-to-Serial adapter and look on your PC's 'Device Manager' under 'Ports' - you should see the USB adapter listed and it should be assigned to a COM Port number. You need to check what COM port numbers are accepted by the Bernina embroidery software (sorry, I cant remember and haven't got one here presently) - it should be in the Options menu. You have to ensure that the USB 'virtual COM port' is the same as that which is set in the Bernina software. If the Bernina software doesn't support the COM port allocated to the USB interface, go to 'Properties, Port settings, Advanced, COM port number and set this to the same as the COM port number in the Bernina software - hopefully this should set up the link OK, provided you haven't got a COM port clash - to avoid this, it's usually best to choose a COM port number of 2 or above.

Cant connect my artista 180 to my pc it says 'serial port engaged'

Try changing to a different COM port and make sure you haven't got any other applications running that might be using the serial port, even if you've nothing connected ... have you recently installed something that might be using the COM port ?

How do I connect a 180e serial cable to my usb computer when Artlink and CPS software specify serial port?

I've not successfully managed this ... trouble-is that although you can get USB-to-serial converters, most computers that only have USB ports do not properly 'recognise' COM ports, which is what your Artlink software expects to talk to. I still use an old PC with a 'proper' 9-pin serial port on the back in order to talk to the old Artista range of machines. One of the drawbacks of a 'throwaway' PC industry that expects the rest of the world to continually update everything in response to new interface standards!

Trying to connect a USB to the serial port of a Bernina Sewing Machine (Bernina 170). Has been working for a couple of years and has stopped all of a sudden. Does not work on and XP PC, Vista or win 7....

The Dynex adapter does not have any numbers on it. It was the one that is only about a foot in length and has a square center piece that houses the conversion electronics. Standard 9 pin RS-232 male plug on one end and the standard USB plug on the other end. I purchased it within the last month at BestBuy here in Austin TX.

check the com port of the appliaction, it is based on com1 only then you will need to make changes to the com4 to com1 follow these steps
open device manager
choose com4 and then right click for properties
choose port settings
choose advance
change the port number from 4 to 1
that will be all you can now give it a shot again

Hi I'm Kandy When I try and load a card stitch I keep getting the following error message: PCDWIN22 Caused a General Protection Fault in Module PCD_WIN.EXE at 0005:38F6. The software then shuts down. I...

I replaced my USB/Serial RS232 port adapter with a genuine RS232 serial port on the PC. THis solved the problem. Further reasearch on the net indicated that USB to RS232 - serial port converters do often have problems. I previously had not had a problem running on Windows XP and this is what alerted me to the possibility of the USB/RS232 port adapter as a possible reason for the "new" problem.

Bernina 180 usb to serial cable not working

it's in your computer control panel - you need to assign the com port to the cable - it took me a few tries.

In the long run, I bought the Editor Lite software for $120 on ebay - it comes with a USB dongle - that solved all my issues other than assigning the com port to the serial port. It all works like a charm now.

New computer won't work with Artista software

You need a new security code. When we changed computers we worked with the dealer on where to send the form requesting Access code. You can find the form under Help on the far right of your menu bar. It's the last item called Access Code Order Form. They emaild it back to us with the code we needed along with the install instructions. The dealer should also be able to assist you with your laptop issue, although you may only be able to use the software on 1 PC or laptop as you are probably licensed for 1 copy, and they us the dongle to validate the software and the machine combination.

Best of luck.

Connection problem with computer to sewing machine and reader/writer

It is not true that the 180 is not compatible with new software.
I'm owning a artista 180 from 2002 and just installed the software designer V5+ on a laptop with windows vista.
The only problem was that there was no serial port on the laptop, now I have a new cable with USB ans serial output and the software works very well !!
When you contact Bernina you will get the same answer.

greetings Carla
