always preferable to use windows nt or above (i prefer win xp pro sp2)..
guess u r using such as u r working in some local language pack & or ur pc is back-dated..
immediately hv installed with some licensed n UPDATED antivirus (dat supports win98se)[i prefer avg/kaspersky]..
remove unnecessary items from boot..download n install 'Startup Control Panel'..in here uncheck unimportant startup items..

I guess you are aware that Windows 98 is no longer supported by most of the programs and software released today, not to mention that it is no longer supported by it's manufacturer.
