1) The VCR section is not completing its powerup self test successfully.
2) There is a problem with the TV section causing the protect circuit to kick in.
Neither problem can be diagnosed remotely. In my experience with these sets, the VCR section is usually the problem. There are 2 belts that have dried up a bit and are slippery and may not be allowing the powerup/reset to complete. These belts are usually around $2 each and relativelty easy to change for an experienced shop. Check around for a local repair shop that can take a loko for you.

my Emerson tv/dvd/vhs has a weird circle of color that differs from the normal picture in the center of the screen. this came on suddenly, not over time. a friend suggested that a magnet had been run over the screen. Any suggestions on what to do to fix this?
