Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Compressor cycles I have a Kenmore Elite Model 106.54609300 fridge. Two days go I noticed that the ice had melted and the frozen food had thawed. It is still cold, but not freezing. The fridge section is also not as cold as it should be. I have cleaned all the coils and the fan. While cleaning, I noticed that the compressor will kick on for about 5 seconds, then shut off. It does ths about every 3-4 minutes. Also, the fan runs continuously. I swapped the relay from aother fridge I have (same part number relay) and it does the exact same thing. Any suggestions?

look my friend where the realy connects to the compressor you can see three connections in a triangular configuration,

    O O

Theses are start run and common, The comressor when swtiched on starts on the start winding for the inital ump needed to get going.. once the comressor gets going then it switches over to the run winding this run winding has failed therefore the compressor has failed..

I would suggest you turn off your fridge for a few days, pull it out and drain the water reservoir catchment; usually above the compressor. Vacuum the dust from the back of the fridge compressor and then plug it back in. If it repeats the fault, then you need to order a part that controls the defrost cycle for your fridge. Sometimes, one of the defrost coils goes bad which uncoordinates the cycle time.

I have a Frigidaire Model FRT18s6aws year model 06. It will thaw an d refreeze food and ice on and off. When it thaws it seems the fan is working fine and is triing to get cold and the next day everything...

When your unit thaws - do you hear the compressor kicking on at the start of a cycle? If not, maybe the compressor relay it hanging up somehow. Or the compessor capacitor is malfunctioning. It is NOT a compressor problem though.

If you are capable of getting to the defrost heater circuit, you should check the defrost thermostat and timer (if there is not ice build up behind the panel. If the defrost circuit is active too long it could cause that condition - but you defrost heater is not the problem unless there is an ice build up.

My 2003 kenmore elite french door fridge made noise for several days, then died. Repairman said it was compressor...expensive repair, so I bought new fridge. Old fridge came back to life 48 hours after...

I bet the bearings in your compressor are bad. The compressor will run and heat up but after getting hot it won't always restart. Most of the time it happens with Tecumseh compressors.

Kenmore bottom freezer died, fridge not cold either

Please keep in mind, I'm attempting to diagnose the problem without being there and with little information.
You are most likely going to have one of five problems.
  1. Condenser fan not turning (Fan under unit)
  2. Defrost problem (Heaters bad)
  3. Coils under unit dirty
  4. Defrost timer bad
  5. Bad compressor (Vary unlikely)
These are listed in order as to be the most likely to be the problem. I would check them in this order if I were called out on a service call with this problem.
. Respond back if you need me to walk you through checking any if these.

Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator not cooling

No, it is not a failed condenser. You need to see if the compressor is running though. When it runs you shaould have a fan in the freezer running, a fan underneath the fridge running, and the compressor should be running. I would be willing to bet that either the compressor is bad, or the start relay on the compressor.

Freezer thawed, fridge warmed

The compressor is short cycling, or not starting. being purchaced in 2004, the compressor may be under a 5 year part and labor warranty with SEARS ...BUT GOOD LUCK!!!. Find ur receipt and warranty. read carefully and hold them to it.. empty it and unplug to be safe

Freezer is filled with ice and frost

you could have a problem with your defrost cycle.

but in order to conclude that, you need to thaw everything ( I MEAN EVERYTHING ) in the freezer box so if you have a spare refrigerator to stuff all the food that will be ruin in case you unplug this fridge for about two days. just to be sure that everything thaws out completely. then do it.

after two days with both doors open, plug it back in and observe the freezer back wall. check if the ice would re appear after 4 days.

if it does not, then it is just a clogged drain or too much water in the air that the heater was not able to melt the frost.

if it comes back, then you have a heater problem.

3 things,

heating element, bi-metal., and the controller.( electronic module pcb)

tnx 4 using fixya,

Kenmore Model # 596.735032.. Fridge is cool, Freezer is not freezing

After pulling the fridge away from the wall and removing the lower right hand panel I noticed that the compressor (big round black ball with copper tubing) was not turning on. I also noticed that there was a ticking or popping sound comming from it every couple of minutes or so. After doing some research online in numerouse forums I decided to try and replace the overheat relay that is attached to the compressor. It only took maybie five minutes at most to change it and the compressor is now working with nice cold air comming into the fridge and freezer. Hope this helps someone else with the same problem.

Freezer/Fridge work SOMETIMES

Sounds like you have a bad relay on the compressor or a bad compressor. If the compressor is a Tecumpseh brand then it is most likely the problem.
