Cassette deck not working

Hello -

I have the below-mentioned tape deck which I've used very little in the past six-or-so years. Recently, when I tried to play a cassette, the machine wouldn't run. It displayed some lights but the tape wouldn't move. After a few seconds, the play arrow would go out. When I tried to remove the tape, the door wouldn't open.

After opening up the case I was able to release the latch and remove the cassette. Everythiing looked good inside: the belts and rollers looked fresh... nothing that I could notice looked amiss.

I've just noticed on ebay that some one is selling a machine just like mine with what sounds like the same symtoms:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's given me years of good service and I would like to continue using it from time to time.

Thanks, in advance.

- Thank you for your advice.

The belt does indeed seem to be slipping. I'll try to clean as you suggested. I think I also got grease on the belt and pulley as I poked around. It is quite tight in there.

How would you suggest changing the belts, and where do you buy them? Do you completely disassemble the drive mechanism?

Thank you, in advance, for your reply.

- Thanks again for your advice. I was able to find two new belts andreplace them.

I had forgotten how well this machine works. Thanks to you it has a new lease on life.

Hi, with the lid off operate the unit and see if drive still gets from the motor to capstan flywheel. Sometimes even although belts look ok, the have a buildup on the drive surfaces that will prevent it from applying enough tractive effort to the flywheel to engage the rolling mechanism. most of the hard work in ooperating the transport occurs when you select a function as the transport engages cam gears and followers to provide mechanical movement to engage the operation you have selected. You can fix this by cleaning the belt by running it across a cotton bud dipped in solvent (i use acetone, or iso alchohol),but replacing the belt is generally a longer term solution. If you need more advice then hitme back... happy to help
