I've had this laptop since 2004 as a graduation present..
everything worked fine. about 2 years later i decided to upgrade ram from 512mb (hp) to 1gb (consair) as well as a bad 40gb hdd to 80gb hdd.. after that it kept working fine for about another year.. when i started noticing the power supplies not fitting right on the laptop.. adjusting or pressing it in would start it and be fine. now every time i plug it in with the power supplies it boots once its in but shuts down 3 seconds later to repeat the 3 second cycle until i unplug it.
