Kenmore Electric Range - Door handle

I purchased bolts (to Factory spec) that screw my oven door and handle together. Problem is I can't screw the bolt into the hole in the door handle. Two reasons:
1. Diameter of the factory bolts appear to be as large as the diameter of the hole in the oven door handle.
2. the head on the (phillips) bolts is so small that my #1 and #2 phillips screwdrivers can't get required traction to drive bolts into the oven door handle.

Kenmore oven is two years old, Model 96113. Original bolts installed at the factory came loose and dislodged from the door handle. Sears Parts assistant said the original bolts for my stainless steel model were not to spec (undersized), causing the problem. The new bolts are approx 1/4 inch longer.

Thanks. Randl

I have the same problem with my 2 year old gas version of this stainless steel oven door. It popped off yesterday, for the 5-6 time in two years. I've had some luck screwing the bolt back in with an allen wrench (hex) size 3/32 but it's only a temporary fix.

I wondered if my screws were too short. Because I'm out of warranty, I can get no help without paying a service call fee. I bought Kenmore elite microwave, refrigerator, microwave oven/hood and dishwasher. The dishwasher is the only thing that hasn't broken in the past 2 years. Man, I HATE Sears! I paid $4,000 for all those appliances because Kenmores were supposed to last forever.

IMO the wrong screws were used at the factory. The first 4 or 5 times the handle {One side only} came off. The last 2 times both sides came off. I used C-Clamps to hold the door in place to get more screw into the handle and it lasted about 4 months. The handle never comes off before cooking, only after the oven is hot.

The handle on our $1450 gas range keeps coming off when the oven is hot. My husband keeps putting it back on but now can't due to the screw being stripped. It is out of warranty (of course). Any ideas would be great.

I have had the same problem with my door handle, and today when the handle came off, it caused the glass to separate and shatter, when researching this problem, I found that many people have had the exact same problem with their Kenmore ranges.

I just thought we were being to rough with the door. But since I am the only one that cooks, it's not because of overuse or slamming. NOw I can't figure out how to put the handle back on and I am not paying for a repair call. It's less than two years old!

  • wolfguy03 Dec 26, 2008

I had the same problem with the handle today when cooking christmas dinner. The handle fell after using the oven all day. Upon looking at the screws I noticed they are at least 1/4 inch too small.....with this being a common problem....shouldn't this become a recall issue????

I have also had problems with the interior of the oven and the door warping from the heat of extended use? Kenmore replaced the oven after numerous arguments because it was still under warranty (which of course it is no longer...and I refuse to pay Sears that kind of money)

I have the same problem. My door handle has come off at least 10-15 times over the course of the past few years. First one side, then the other side, now both sides. The handle will nto stay on anymore because the screw holes are stripped. I actually have duct tape holding the whole door, glass, and everything together. This is crazy! Isn't Kenmore supposed to be a good brand name. I have called about twenty different Sears representatives and still no solution other than me paying a service call (for a door handle) or paying the outragous $50 price for a new door handle. I am not satisfied and won't be until the president of Sears sends me a new door handle.

I have the problem and will try to order new screws. Its crazy. Wwe hate Kenmore and consumers reports gives them good ratings??

  • Anonymous Apr 17, 2009

Our Kenmore oven handle fell off after only a year. Since then we've screwed it back on numerous times. Tonight the handle fell off for good. The screws seem too short and are now stripped from the handle. We're extremely shocked because Kenmore is supposed to be a good brand.

Not to mention, this is a serious safety hazard. We have a 2 yr old that could get seriously injured if the handle pops off and the door/glass comes crashing down.

We have the same problem. Sears sent a tech out who said he could replace the screws for $200( I thought he was working for the government). We are very upset at this problem as it comes loose when it is hot and is almost impossible to get back together. We plan to talk to the store manager to see what can be done. Last time it happened we ttok the handle from the bottom and used it on the top. Heat and poor design appear to be the problem

I had the same problem with my stove. I tried to replace, glue the srews and other things, but nothing really worked well. It's a shame that Kennmore has such a design flaw in their stoves, but did nothing to help their customers.

Here is the solution that worked for me:

Fix the thread with helicoils (these are inserts that create a new threat in the handle). You can find the instructions how to use the helicoils on Youtube.
I replaced the crews with new screws that fit to the helicoil threat and now the handle is safely secured.

Michael

I have had my oven handle fall off 3 times now. It's a Kenmore 9641. It's a real problem, because when the screw that holds the handle falls out, the whole door comes apart. Quite a safety hazard. I will never buy another Kenmore!

This is absurd! I have the same problem with a Kenmore that I bought less than 5 years ago. I rarely use the oven, but the handle has fallen off twice in the past 8 months. The solution seems to be to BUY new parts--and of course they will be costly. Is this planned so the company and the service department can make money??

Cleaning glass in oven door double glass

You would have to take the door apart. Two screws at the handle and 3 screws on the bottom. BE sure to take the door off the oven first and lay everything on a soft sheet. Do not put uneven pressure on the door glass, wear safety glasses and do not over tighten any screws.

Elite range

This pertains to model 790 Kenmore ranges, comprised of an oven door handle that is mounted on the door's glass.

Be careful when tightening the oven's door handle. Even slightly over tightening would likely result in the glass shuttering, because tightening the screws pulls in and thus presses the handle against the glass. This is a problematic design in my opinion. I'd rather give up on a couple inches in the width of the glass, than be unable to adequately tighten the screws fastening the handle and risk shattering the glass.

Kenmore Electric Range - Door handle Original bolts installed at the factory came loose and dislodged from the door handle.... no problems but this... i can not screw the handle back myself.. i tried......

We had the same problem. We had some tough epoxy that we squirted into the bolt holes, then screwed the bolts in. It took two of us, one to hold the door together and one to screw in the bolts. We didn't use the oven until the epoxy set, but now we no longer have a problem with the door falling apart every time we open the oven door!

How to replace a oven handle on a FRIG. electric oven , FES367

it's easy
open the door to first catch. About 10 to 12 inches it will stop and stay there. next pull the oven door off it's hinges. just give it a **** and it will slide right off it's hinges. after the oven door is off remove the screws from the outside panel. save them in a safe place cause you will need them to hold the door together. now that it's cover is removed you will see the 2 screws that hold the handle on. Thats it reverse it to put it back together. it's easy you can do it your self... sawdust46

Oven door handle (right side)came loose

If you put the door at a 45 degree angle on the hinges, it will lift right off. Then once on the ground, it should be easy to remove the screws of the inner panel and expose the screws that the door handle attaches to.

Exterior glass trim on Kenmore Electric Range 880-5981

While waiting for someone else to answer my question, I fiddled around with the door parts. I managed to reassemble them! Here's how:

1. start with the glass panel. Slide the glass panel into the slot at the bottom of the front door frame on the stove.

2. next attach the handle. There are slots on the bottom of the handle that fit into the top of the glass panel. Slide the handle slots into the top of the glass panel.

3. screw the handle onto the oven door using the predrilled holes on the inside face of the oven door.

4. last, attach each of the two side trim strips. Slide the top of each strip into the bottom of the handle on each side of the oven door. Then slightly bend the strip outwards so that they are short enough to fit into the bottom slot of the oven door frame on each side of the glass panel.

A hinge bolt/screw may have loosened to allow the door to be out of alignment. Maybe try to flex the door side to side and look for movement to isolate which bolt/screws may be loose.
