If your hard drive is locked you're out of luck. I'm not calling you a thief, but 99% of the time when you encounter a computer that has a password on the hard drive and the person in possession of the computer does not know the password, the computer is stolen. Hard Drive passwords are put on to keep thieves from getting to sensitive data.

You'll need to enter the BIOS and disable the hard drive password. If you can't do that for any reason, you'll either need to open it up and find the BIOS reset/clear jumper or send it to a technician, Acer or otherwise.. Just not Geeksquad. I wouldn't let them wipe my nose...

You need to give the drive a drive letter if it does not have one, that will be causing your problem. Right click on the drive and click change drive letter and paths. Then give it a letter that none of your other drives have.

Go into BIOS and change the SATA MODE into IDE then try again .

You will need to seek out an engineer, as it will need to be taken apart and then they can short it out at a certain place to reset it.

The main factors in upgrading your drive are interface type and physical size, specifically the thickness of the drive. I haven't had any issues come up from substituting a drive of a different RPM yet. BTW I have a drive that's the same model as yours, it came from a computer that acted up like you're describing, the owner didn't worry about it, and one day it decided it wasn't going to wake up...you shouldn't have any trouble going from an 80gb to a 160gb drive.I believe your drive is an IDE interface, So just make sure you don't order a SATA, toshiba has comparable drives in either interface, I'd look for a good warranty period if the prices are about equal on the drives you're considering
