hp 5150 only prints e-mail. When I try to print from Word, a sheet of paper goes into the printer, stops and then I get an message that the printer is out of paper. I have powered down many, many times, printer and laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200). Sometimes, when I've gotten past the "out of paper" message it say "paper jam". Help!

I had installed a new black print cartridge just before these problems happened. On this HP, when a new cartridge is installed, the printer must go through an alignment procedure and produce a printout in the process. For some reason I did not let the printer do this and that scrambled it's little electronic brains. The troubleshooting section of the printer's documentation recommends not only turning off the printer but unplugging it from its power source as well. Once that was done, the printer went through its alignment function, printed out the obligatory sheet and we were back to normal operations.

Lesson learned - when powering down, always unplug the printer as well as turning it off.
