Dell Inspiron 6000 monitor display problem

Attempted to boot up OS on Dell Inspiron 6000 - Windows XP splash screen displays on laptop monitor, but then goes to black screen. OS completely loads (I can hear Windows startup sound, etc.). If hook up external monitor, can see and access everything.
Attemped to boot up to last known good whatever - same problem
Attempted to boot up OS in Safe mode, then can see everything on laptop monitor.
Attempted to perform system restore - won't restore to previous dates
Viewed Device Manager - no bangs or question marks
Looked at video driver and monitor settings - they haven't been altered, so cannot roll back to previous driver (Adapter = ATI Mobility Radeon X300, Monitor = "default monitor")
When displayed on external monitor, hit FN+F8 on laptop, which is for CRT/LCD - nothing displays on laptop
Checked the switch that disables the display when the laptop is closed - nothing looks to be awry
Screen resolution is set to what it has always been set

I don't understand how it could be a hardware or driver problem if I am able to see everything when booted in safe mode. Reinstalling windows does not seem reasonable to me since I am using that installation of windows right now to post my question (via the external monitor, of course).

Please help if you can!!
Thank you!

Thank you for the advice. I uninstalled the driver, rebooted, and was able to see the display on the laptop monitor. Then, I downloaded the appropriate video driver from, installed it, and rebooted. I'm back to the same display problem. The only way I can get the display to work is if I hook up to an external monitor, uninstall the driver, and reboot. Once I get the laptop to display, if I reboot, I run into the same problem again. So basically, each time I reboot, I have to hook up to an external monitor, uninstall the video driver, and reboot. Do you think that reinstalling the OS would work, or is there some files I can replace (in addition to the driver) that may resolve the problem?

    Thank you!

Well it is most likely a issue with the Video driver as you are able to boot to the safe mode.I would suggest going back to the safe mode and deleting the present driver for the video from the device manager.before you restart the system just download the latest version from the so that you can reinstall it.Also check in the graphic properties which screen is set to be the defuat.Incase still not working i would suggest reinstalling the operating system before replacing any hardware.

I would say reinstall the windows as there could not be any specific file apart from the video driver which you are already reinstalling

Installed a rangeplus adapter on dell 1000 inspiron xp sp3 home

See if you can go into safe mode by hitting the F8 key right after the dell splash screen and right before the XP splash screen comes up. If you can get into safe mode try to uninstall the rangeplus adapter and try reinstalling again after rebooting the system normally.

My Inspiron 6000 screen is blank. I can get an image on a monitor through the serial port, but when on its own, the notebook screen is black. I have noticed that there is a brief flash when booting up, but...

Hi ,

1. You can check the display on external monitor>If the display is blank on external monitor also, its pretty clear that there is an issue with system board

2. If the Exernal monitor comes up fine, it will be an issue with the display of the laptop, you can cross check the issue by booting the computer to BIOS, IF you get same response on BIOS as well. Its an issue with the Display itself you can replace the display panel.

Hopefully, its covered under warranty ;)

My IBM ThinkPad T22 boots but there is no display what can i do? and how do i install windows xp on it?

It could be a problem of resolution higher than your monitor support.
Turn it on and press F8 before windows comes up, you'll see a menu of Windows startup; select ENABLE VGA MODE, after windows Boots go to the Display Properties--->Settings and change the resolution for a lower one, then restart.
Good Luck!!!

Acer aspire 5220 booting problem

Try connecting to an external monitor. If it displays on the external monitor then the LCD is probably dead. If it doesn't display on the external monitor, its a problem with the video card.

Your PC is not completing bootup. It's not the display, it's Windows.

Try booting to Safe Mode (F8) and running System Restore to a time before the issue cropped up. That should get the PC running again.

Dell inspiron

Try booting into safe mode by continually pressing the F8 key while the system is starting up..this should allow you to get into windows where you can try to reinstall your drivers. Most likely this is a driver issue with the video card or your refresh rate or display resolution is set too high.

Did you fix the Dell Insipirion 9200 video problem?

This sounds like your video settings could be set improperly, did you attempt to boot up in safe mode and then change your display options? Sometimes you need to monkey with windows to get it to accept new video settings, try removing the video display from the control panel, if this has been done and you can't correct the issue a reload may be in order or at worst case you may have a malfunctioning video card
