I can't transer file sizes more than 4 GB... What I've done to get around this is save my movies in multiple parts to make each file size smaller. Is there something I need to be able to transfer my files to my External Harddrive without it quitting at 4 GB?

- alright well how do I accomplish this?? I completely understand the whole problem but have no idea how to reformat my External HardDrive. Also, I would have to move everything off of that to do this, correct? I am running on Mac OSX 10.4.11 if that is any help,
thanks again

- I am using a MAC, I did some research and using Disk utility I can change the format of my Hard Drive...It is Formatted to Fat32 right now as you said, my options to Reformat it are: Mac OS Extended(Journaled), Mac OS Extended,Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive, Journaled) Mac OS Extended(Case Sensitive), MS-Dos File System, Unix File System... Would/Should I be better off hooking my External Drive to a Windows computer and reformat it on there and then use it with my Mac or will that not work???
You have to change your hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS,because FAT32 limits the size of tranfered file to 4GB.

- Because reformatting your hard drive will wipe it clean ,you need to retrieve any files you need.Another point is it's not so easy to reformat back to FAT32 it's difficult.but It can be done . To format you hard drive. Plug in your hard drive.on your PC go to Start,Right click on computer and select Manage. Under Storage click on Disk Management.Find your hard drive in the list and Right click on it and select Format. Under File System change the Answer to NTFS and leave the Allocation Unit to Default.Click on Perform Quick Format if you want. ClickOK and confirm your OK with losing all data on the drive and your done.

- Sorry,I assumed you were using a Windows PC. I can't in all honesty say that"Hooking" your hard drive to a Windows PC will do the job. .Personelly if all else fail that's what I would do,but a new hard drive would cost around £50.
This will be a limitation of file size imposed by your operating system and drive format method. For drives formatted under FAT16 (2Gb) or FAT32 (4Gb - 2 bytes). FAT64 allows up to 16Zb while NTFS and NTFS5 both allow any size up to the actual volume capacity so with a 500Gb drive the max would be 500Gb for 1 file. I would therefore suggest that you retrieve all your stored data on the drive and reformat it with NTFS. Then you can have 1 continuous file instead of lots of 4Gb files.

Hello, I have a Western Digital External Hard Drive (My Book) that my PC suddenly won't recognise. When I connect the HD via usb 2.0 there is a loud clicking sound followed by some whirring. This happens three or four times then stops. Device Manager on PC says no drivers detected. Had WD Drive for about five or six years. Running Windows XP. Thanks for any advice. Jonathan
