I have a problem with the HDMI hookup. The sound

I have a problem with the HDMI hookup. The sound on the DVR recording are not good. Sometimes there is no sound and I have to rewind and then go forward. Sometimes when I am watching live TV the same problem happens. What is causing this?

  • sja500 Nov 03, 2009

Yes I did try the component cables and the problem pretty much did go away. Does that mean it is an HDMI connection problem? Is the problem with the TV or the DVR cable box?

Have you tried using component cables to see if the issue goes away? If it doesn't resolve the problem, it may be the DVR.

I've come across issues in the past where low quality hdmi cables can cause issues like this. When they were upgraded, the problem was resolved. With having you switching the cables, I wanted to make sure that the audio and video output of the dvr was functioning correctly, which it seems to be. I don't think that you have a problem with either the TV or the DVR. There is a term known as the "HDMI handshake" between 2 components that are connected. Where the DVR isn't even aware that their is a problem with either intermittent audio or video to the TV. It's just that communication via the hdmi cable causes the TV to keep trying to interface with the DVR if it "senses" any inadequacies in data transfer from the DVR. I am not sure what quality hdmi cables you are utilizing, but a higher quality pair will hopefully suffice to resolve the issue. Just a suggestion.. Try finding cables online, such as ebay. You will get a much better deal on them. I hope this information is of some help, despite sordid rambling..lol. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me. I would be more than happy to assist you in any way possible. Good luck!

I have a Denon avr-3808ci. I have a Dish Network DVR and a Sony KDS-60A2020 tv. If I connect the HDMI cable on the DVR directly to the tv, I get picture and sound through the tv. If I connect the HDMI...

You are correct. I feel your pain. This will not work.

HDMI is a pure digital signal and the providers require the content coming over the Dish DVR to be COPY PROTECTED. So it will not work unless the HDMI cable goes directly from the DVR to the TV. This is to stop people from being able to make their own recordings of Dish shows, or making copies of your DVR recordings. If you really want to run things through your reciver, you're going to have to use the "component" or "composite" video feeds, not the HDMI. Sorry.

I have a HDTV and would like to hookup my DVR and DVD to it in order to be able to record using my DVD player.

More specific information is required for a definitive answer.

In general, you cannot use a DVD player to make recordings. It should be connected to the HDTV using S-video & red/white audio connectors, or HDMI connector.
A DVR would be connected to the original source, Satellite, Cable or Over The Air, and then to the HDTV. That would allow it to capture the video and audio to the hard disk, and pass through any other or the same program.
You need multiple inputs to the HDTV to connect a DVR and DVD at the same time. If you want to use the HDTV tuner to capture over the air broadcasts, you need to connect audio and video out from the TV to 'inputs' on the DVR.

I have a 32inch Phillips HD ready TV but there does not seem to be and HD input for my DVD player

"HD input" is HDMI. If the DVD doesn't have HDMI output then use the 5 wire hookup - the component hookup.
The TV input for HD would be HDMI or component input - 5 wires.

How to hookup dvr cable hd box to dvd player with surround sound

If you have HDMI on the dvr and the tv use this cable connection this will handle audio and the video at it`s best, if you do not have HDMI, use the 3 component video outputs to the tv and a digital audio connection from the dvr to the tv

Need diagram to connect Motorola DVR, Panasonic DMR-E recorder, A/V Receiver, and HDTV

Your not going to be able to connect in series (not sure if thats your goal) since your limited by the type of connections you can use. Your receiver is going to have to be switched depeneding on what source you want to listen too. DVR, DVD, etc. HDMI is going to important for your TV connection. Radio Shack has cheap HDMI cables.
So... connect HDMI from DVR to HDTV this will give you sound and picture to TV. Connect DVR optical or coaxial ( RCA if you dont care about surround) to Receiver to give you DVR sound thru Receiver input.
Connect DVD to receiver via optical/coaxial/rca for DVD sound thru receiver (again RCA is not recommended for surround).
Connect Component video to HDTV(or HDMI if TV has second HDMI input) to give you video from DVD.
Connect Yellow video or S-video from DVR to DVD recorder input to allow recording from DVR. Also connect red/white audio to (same) DVD input.
That should cover it.

DVR/TV connection

With the RGB you have to run seperate audio ,I think you have ran the seperate cables for the sound but they are in the wrong place.try changing the RW from the DVR to the TV and you should get sound from them. The unfortunate truth about the HDMI is that the HDMI format has a problem effectivly communicating between components.I am a Directv certified High Definition technition and %50 of the TV's that I connect the HDMI to will not receive the signal. One trick that I have found that works is to make sure you have a picture on the RGB then connect the HDMI.Once you have these connected ,turn your TV off and unplug the power cord from the DVR for 30 sec then plug the DVR in and wait 5 minutes for it to power up then turn your TV on and switch to your HDMI input. This method sometimes works to "Jumpstart" the HDMI input on the TV .There is no guarantee that this will work but is sounds like for now this is your only option,GOOD LUCK.
