Question about Sony VPL FX50 Multimedia Projector

2 Answers

Sony VPL FX50 Won't power up. Bulb appears to be fine.

When I plug in my projector the amber standby light illuminates and a quiet fan runs. When I hit the power button the light momentarily turns green, a squeal comes from the power supply (area) and then it goes dead. I have to leave it unplugged for about 15 seconds before it will do anything again. I just bought it used on E-Bay. And these were my initial findings when I tried to power it up for the first time. I found a fuse, but it appeared to be good. Is there a trick I'm missing or am I looking at an electrical issue? Please help.
Thanks! Danny

I had the cover off & checked the fans they are free, however I didn't try to power them in any way. It kills the power less than one second after I hit the power button, so I don't belive it's an over heating issue. I'll look more closely at the power supply to see if anything obvious jumps out at me. In the bulb the element looks fine, but there is a coil of spring like material that looks like the same material the element is made from and the windings don't look uniform. Not sure what it's supposed to look like I wondered if it could be getting a strange resistance when it trys to power the bulb and just jumps into a protection mode. I don't want to just buy a new bulb if I don't have to as the seller claimed this one only had 50 hours on it. Thanks for the rapid response. If I get in over my head is there a service center you work with that I could send it to? Thanks for the rapid response.

Hi and happy new yeay im sorry to say but it looks like it has overheated and blown somehting on the board you should check the fan isnt seezing when you press the button before it turns green.
But this problem without me actually been their myself would say it has got to hot and perhaps blown a resistor these can be replaced for cheap.
If the light lights up then it is not the going to be the fuse.
What i would do is take the case of and becarefull not to touch anything causing something else to short then switch it on and see where the noise is coming from.
You might be lucky and just need the fan replacing so try this first.
If the fan works fine check all air vents are free from dust and fluff if still no joy you will need to look at all the resistors around where the power supply goes int the projector right upto the fan part of the board.
You will need a good magnifying glass preferably one that lights up as they can be difficult to locate blown resistors.
If you are unsure what you are doing please leave to a pro as the are still live even after switching of for 24 hours and can kill.
You should see the blown resistors or might be couple.
you will also need a really good soldering iron to replace and remove bad resistors let me know hwta you want to do ok

Hi again have you tried holding the power button down for 5 seconds this usually resets the unit if you can trust the bloke you brought it off and the bulb is fine then its going to be a shorting issue if it shuts off a soons as you press the power button then the fault is going to be anything on the circuit after that power button.
If you are unsure what to look for then you might never find the problem.
It could be something simple like a bad solder or even a blown resistor if you have a good magnifying glass and well lit area you moght see the resistor could look melted or blackend but if you are unsure at soldering an unsoldering then please dont do it as even touching the circuit board before earthing your body out could blow a chip on the board.
the best place to find repair shop is look in phone book as it is difficult for me to keep telling you the sollution when i dont have it in front of me.
But as it switches off as soon as you press the button it might just be loose conector or a bad solder if it was anything serious or expensive then the unit wouldnt even light up let me know what you want to do good luck

An electrical issue (power supply area) is correct. check manufacturer for part replacement info would be the best move.

On/Standby light flashes red four times

These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/

Sony vpl-hs20 cineza projector- reset lamp counter

These instructions are for a Sony Cineza VPL HS3, but may be the same for the HS3.
1st thing to check - is the cover properly/completely closed - this can stop the projector from working.
Connect the power and set the projector to standby mode.
Press these buttons on the remote control in this order, for less than 5 seconds each.
Reset - Left Arrow - Right Arrow - Enter

This is required, to reset the lamp timer.

Also, something I found interesting from the internet - lamp life isn't when the bulb dies, but when a bulb has lost 10% of its brightness - so you might well be able to reset the timer and get much more use from the bulb - the image just wont be as bright.
