Re: hard drive not rcognized

Hi i think you need to change the jumper settings on the back of the hd to tell your comp that this isnt the main hd if you have allready done this then the only sollution is to trace down the software that came with that hd.
You might be able to get it off the net i will also look for you and check to see if the jumper setting are causing you problems i will post back as soon as i find anything out ok let me know how you get pn

Vista has a big problem recognizing usb drives - and no one has one right way to fix this yet. The first thing you should try is installing this update from microsoft that combines all USB hotfixes into one download. (it's update 941600). Scroll down to "More Information" and download the version of the fix that applies to your vista installation.

If that still doesn't work, try following the instructions here, and deleting your .inf files.

Drive Will Not Open

This dilemna happens frequently, especially with machines running Windows 8. Recently, I had 2 hard drives that just randomly show as RAW disks. It sounds like you have important data you need to salvage, but ultimately, the drive will need to be reformatted in order to once again work with your operating system.
You have two options to recover your data:
1. Download a linux based operating system called UBUNTU
It can be installed on a disc, and run entirely off the disk without affecting your computer. Magically, Linux operating systems struggle less with accessing difficult drives. You may be able to simply run Ubuntu off of the cd, plug in your drive and simply copy and paste the important data onto a different backup media.
Option 2:
Download EASEUS recovery tool for free.
Using this program, you can scan the disk for bad sectors, and you can set the program to repair the disk, making it accessible. Even after, the disk may show as a group of scattered disorganized folders, but you should be able to find the information, move it to another media and then re-format for a brighter future.
Good luck,

The only way to use this externally would be to get an ide/sata to usb adapter, like this:

As for using it internally, you would connect it with the same ribbon cable that is connected to your current hard drive. Then the new drive you would have to set to slave, there will be a jumper on the end of the drive where you plug it in. It should tell you where to move the jumper to to set it as slave.

Upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 ,now storage device not showing.

Have you tried to shut down the computer, unplug the usd external drive, reboot the computer, plug in the USB external HDD the should apply the driver. That said, Have you tried a Thumb Drive or any other USB device in the USB ports? It's a common problem when upgrading a OS that Hardware issues popup. Open the Device Manager, Is your USB controller working? Enabled? Any other devices in error? Unknown devices? Use the Win 7 drivers for your computer found on the computer manufacturer's website. Change the compatibility on the driver for Win 8.

Windows is unable to read the usb

When you formatted the drive for the Mac, you probably used the HFS format. Windows can only read NTFS or FAT formatted drives. You will need to reformat your external drive again. If you use a FAT32 format, all computers will be able to read the drive (Windows, UNIX and Mac - anyway). Note: the FAT32 option does limit the number of files in each directory and the maximum file size.

First back up any files that you have put on the external drive to another disc (your computer's hard disc, for example).
If you are using the M2 external disc for Time Machine backups, you should partition the drive into two sections. Format one to the FAT32 and the other to HFS.

The Disc Utility in OSX can repartition the drive and reformat it. However, sometimes it doesn't correctly format the new partitions. You may need to do some extra step, see for one set of reformatting steps. In Windows, there is a similar utitily in the Disk Management Control Panel. (Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Create and format hard disk partitions (Windows 7)) You can only format the disc to FAT or NTFS with the Windows utility.

Some third-party software is available for changing the partitions on a hard drive formatted for Windows use without losing the data on the disc. I do not know if similar programs exist for OSX.

Some versions of Unix have gparted which will also repartion and reformat a hard disc but can't keep the original data on the drive. (I've used the Windows and Unix partition managers, including Paragon Partition Manager which let me keep my original Windows data on the drive.)

I hope this helps.

My Western Digital 520 MB portable hard drive is not showing up on my mac. I see its white light blipping constantly but it is not appearing on my computer. It worked a few times the past few days but it...

Try reformatting the drive. In Mac OSX go to the utilities Folder open up Disk Utility. In left hand window of the page you will see your drive. Highlight it. At top of page click on Erase. In Format drop down window select Mac OS Extended (Journaled). In window below format give your disk a name. At bottom of page click Erase.
After you have erased and reformatted click on First Aid at top of page. In First Aid highlight your disc and click on Repair Disc at bottom right hand of page. after Disc Repair try using it again and see if that works.
If it doesn't work repeat the above steps And if the doesn't work try another disc or go for a long walk and breath deeply.

It sound like to me that you have an operating system on that
drive and it will not work on your system , the only way you
can have two OS on your computer is to have both of them
installed and on when installing the OS and they both have
to be formatted the same like NTFS or FAT32 even though
Windows says it will work fine with both its just not true XP
and Vista doesn't work well with both , try taking it out of
its closer and powering it up with your computer go into
Bios and set it up as a slave or as a master that should
allow you to open it to retrieve your data so it can be
reformatted wiped clean and ready to use as a static
HDD storage , external HDD are intended for storage
back ups and should never have an OS installed on them
doing so will only allow your data to become corrupt
and contract viruses and even lock up forever corrupting
the HDD image that is set on it by the RAM . once the
image is corrupt the HDD will never turn on again without
wiping it clean and reformatting .

I don,t know how to copy files on a scan disc

Open Windows Explorer, assuming you're running Windows, and the flash drive should show up with a drive letter, e.g. as E:\ (Doesn't matter what letter.) Copy or drag the files or folders you want to move from this drive to your hard drive, assuming that's where you want them.
It's a good idea not to use Cut and Paste when doing this so the original still exists on the flash drive in case of problems.
Once you've copied what you want from your flash drive, you can reformat it if you wish. Click on Safely Remove Hardware before removing your flash drive from the USB port.
