Question about Olympus Stylus 790SW Digital Camera

Olympus Stylus 790SW - Loss of Photos when using Lexar USB 2.0 Multi-Card Reader

I am having a problem with my Olympus Stylus 790SW losing photos.

When I use a Lexar USB 2.0 Mult-Card Reader (Part # RW022 Rev A), my computer will recognize that there are photos on the card. I attempt to download them and after a short while errors begin to pop up saying that the data is corrupted or not readable.

I then remove the card reader from the computer and place the x-D card back in the camera and find that the pictures are now gone and the camera is giving me two options: 1. "clean the card" or 2. "format the card". I don't want to format the card because I don't want to lose my photos. I removed the card and wiped it with a dry cloth and tried it in the camera again, but continued to receive the same error message.

However, when I use the supplied USB cable that came with the camera and connect the camera directly to the computer, I have no problems with uploading images. It appears to only be a problem when using the card reader.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a way to recover the photos from the x-D card? In the future, I will not use the card reader, but I would really like to recover the 200+ photos that I had taken at Christmas with my family.

I've discovered a solution on my own. It does not solve the problem entirely, but it does recover the photos that I thought were lost.

FIRST STEP: once you notice that your memory card has lost or
corrupted data, STOP. Do not take another photo, do not format the
card, do not do anything that will possibly record or delete data using
the camera or your computer; instead, do this:

Through some internet research I was able to find the following program:
PC Inspector Smart Recovery is a data recovery program for any data device for digital cameras. It enables you to recover accidentally deleted or formatted pictures, videos or sound files from the selected media.

Once downloaded and installed; plug the camera into your computer using the supplied USB cable. Make note of the drive assigned to the camera (E:\, F:\, etc...) and open PC Inspector Smart Recovery. Select the appropriate drive to scan (the one assigned to your camera) and then select a destination location to save the recovered photos. Click start and sit back and wait...and wait...and wait....and wait.... (Note: make sure that you have plenty of batter power in your camera).

When I followed this procedure with my 1GB x-D card; the waiting took 90+ minutes....

But the waiting was well worth it...as the program recovered ALL of my lost photos! I've read that the program may not be able to recover everything, every time; but it worked wonders for me. I thought I had lost these photos and would never see them again. I'm very happy that I was able to find a way to recover them.

It appears that the problem is with using the Card Reader instead of plugging the camera directly into the computer. For this camera, I would recommend that you always use the supplied USB cable and directly connect the camera to the computer when off-loading images. Another note, is that I recommend you format your memory card in your camera, only after you confirm that your photos are saved on your computer (and backed up on 2 different external hard drives if you're crazy like me)

How to upload photos from my olympus mini s camera

ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS TO COMPUTER
If your photos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

Pc not recognising camera/ i can not find my disc

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

I have lost the connector that connects that uploads the photos onto the computer, is there any other way I can connect them?

If the camera accepts an SD card, you can copy your photos to the card. You can then connect your SD card to your PC and download the pics from there.
If your PC does not accept SD cards, you can buy a cheap standard USB cable and an SD card adapter pretty cheap.

Use a card reader to download your pictures. It may solve the problem. After you do, format the card in the camera. Be sure you use a high quality card.

I want to transfer my photos from Olympus Master to an email. I can't seem to find my pictures the way I used to with my old camera. I used to be able to find the photos in my documents. Please help......

Need more info, but you might be better off just to get a multi card reader for about $20 - $30.

1. Plug your multi card reader to your computer via USB port
2. push in your memory card from your camera
3. Memory card will automatically open, or you can open from "my computer" folder.

Multi card reader will come with instructions anyway.

Picture error and loss of pictures taken

In this case you should use recovery software to see if you lost pictures can be got back. Recommend you have a try of Wondershare Photo Recovery, a program which can recover lost pictures, videos can music with both Windows and Mac version, you can free download the program from the sites,

(For Windows Users)
http://www.wondershare.com/pro/photo-recovery.html
(For Mac OS Users)
http://www.wondershare.com/pro/mac-photo-recovery.html

Step-to-Step Instruction:

1. Download and install the trial version on your computer, then connect your camera memory card to the computer (I assume you are using Windows). Start Wondershare Photo Recovery and select the drive letter that assigned to camera memory card.
2. Then choose the file type (all, photo, video, music) click "Star Scan".
3. Now the scanning process will start automatically to look for the deleted items. You will then get a list of all recoverable ones.
4. Preview the photos. If your deleted ones are found, then you need pay to get the activation code. And click "Recover".

Tips:
1. Take the free trial version before you buy.
2. Before your deleted items are recovered, do not save more files to the card.
I hope you good luck, Merry Christmas!
