The transformer - Model:HASU05F apparently went bad during a bad storm - had three consecutive power outages before I could get to the cpu and monitor to turn it off and this happened even tho I have a surge protector. the plug appears to be okay and does the wall socket. my monitor will not come on Help, Terrie

Several things have happened. 1st have you tried plugging the monitor in the wall and not in the surge protector. 2nd does your power button or LED light uo when you power it on? You have stated the transformer is bad due to lighting strike. Have you replaced the transformer? Your monitor should be coverd under the surge protector warranty. Please answer questions and we will go from there.

ViewSonic VE170b 17" LCD Monitor Faulty power

You need to check the fuses on the backlight inverter board, also the logic board may be damaged by the AC voltage.

If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Have somebody take a look at the capacitors in the power supply first, look for caps that are leaking/bulging top, very common failure in LCD monitor.

Half way through pc posting screen goes blank Viewsonic VA1912W LCD Monitor

Common failures in this monitor is the 470uF caps in the inverter section (close to the inverter transformers), but you should replace all the caps in the 5vdc and the 12vdc as a whole set. See example of failed VIEWSONIC monitors due to bad caps: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
