I dropped (about 9 inches) my Maxtor 500Gb external HD

Hi John, yes you are right. Your hard-disk is damaged due to the fall. And although your computer won't find it you may still be able to recover some information from the drive.
If running Windows, plug-in your drive and check the taskbar to see if the safely remove icon comes up. if it does then try one of the following:
1. Install and use a good partition recovery software to recover your entire partition to a safe location. I personally use EASEUS partition recovery.
2. Use a file recovery software like R-Studio to try and recover individual files

Note that either of these processes will take a while, so be patient and make sure you have lots of free space on your computer or on another external drive.

I hope this helps, all the best

Freezes both my desktop and laptop and doesn't let me get to my work on it.

Hi, Let see if I got your posting/description right: 1. Whenever you connect/access your Maxtor OneTouch External in either the desktop or laptop, the PC will freeze/hang; and 2. The Maxtor OneTouch External contains important files/data that you'd rather not delete, hence you cannot format it likewise. Your query "Is it possible I deleted something that gives me access and I need to reload that?" - No, I don't think so. From what can be assumed from your post, "I did delete some stuff off..." thereafter, you started having problem with the drive, the probable problem is when you deleted some of your files, the Maxtor OneTouch External has not finished updating what was deleted in its master file listing when it was disconnected, powered down or a power surge or even a slight glitch. The result is the File Allocation Table got messed up. This is like the Table of Contents of a book. The pages/contents are still there but since the Table of Contents is either missing or damaged, the PC would not not what chapter is in what page. Thereafter whenever you connect it to a PC, the PC spends considerable length of time looking for the File Allocation Table, what files to what area of the Maxtor OneTouch External and eventually uses most if not all of its resources just trying to know which and where. If it is still under warranty, claim for a replacement and demand that your files be recovered and transferred to your replacement/new HD. If no longer under warranty or your files will not be recovered for you, you have to google for a freeware file recovery utility/software. The objective is for the utility program to access your external HD and copy the files inside to another HD that can accommodate your file size. it has to be another 120Gb or higher. It is possible that you have to run your PC/Laptop in Safe Mode if it will not run in Normal Mode with the external HD attached. You may want to refer to this link of a similar concern ( You can also check if the external is spinning inside by touching the enclosure. Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post backhow things turn up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

I backed up my computer on this Maxtor and I cannot figure out how to recover the files.

After you connect it to your pc, it should appear under disk drives in my computer. You should be able to access it from there.

Hard Drive not accessible, now not recognised by computer

Do you have another computer you can plug it into? The problem could be with your USB. If it is, see what updates you installed and then removed that may have affected that. You can also go to the manufacturers web site and download the original firmware or updated firmware files.

Problem open up my maxtor one touch 500gb to retieve photos

first, recover your files. You will need to use hard drive deleted photo recovery program like Asoftech Photo Recovery, you can follow this video to recover deleted photo

I've had to use it many times in the past but in this case you need to plug that drive into another system as an external drive or slave drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files.

After you get back your files, you can then format the drive and reinstall your system.

Does it give you an error message ? Are you running Windows XP or Vista? If so post it here so the problem can be further narrowed down.
You might want to try a chkdsk.

In Windows XP and Vista both, a shortcut to get to the command console is holding the Windows Key and pressing R.

in the command console, type:
chkdsk X: /f /r

Where X is the drive letter of the drive giving you problems.

This will run a chkdsk on your external, restoring files and folders that cannot be accessed.

I also have a Maxtor External hard drive and have to do this quite often. It's pretty frustrating.

Light turns on but My Computer does not recognize the drive

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

Hard drive files recovery

If the drives internal mechanics have failed then theres not much to do. You can try to take it to a professional datarecovery.

It will cost you.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300Gb can't recover data after a system restore

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

The way I solved my problem was to make sure when I restored Windows to the default settings that I did it up to the same support packs and hot fixes then when backing up the system with the Maxtor HD. It took me many days to figure this out... was written it the Maxtor HD documentation and it works fine.

Hope this helps.

The harddrive itself has gone bad, only solution would be to replace the HDD inside the enclosure :-( sorry.
