Question about Dell Latitude CPX650 Notebook

1 Answer

Dell laptop won't boot

My Dell CPx650 laptop won't boot and the only thing I noticed wrong was that the cooling fan stopped working. I wander if replacing the fan will get it back or if these don't have thermal shutdown protection and other internal components are burned.
Thanks
Fred

    Thanks CTF1800

Is good to know that there is protection built in. I tried to boot it up this morning and nothing happened, it tries to start and at times I can hear the drive trying to run, but then it dies again, just after a faint flick of the screen. I took the HD out and tried to boot up for the setup screen but it will not come up. When this happened, I was trying to get a wireless internet connection up and I had just installed the internet provider software and the USB router signal receiver, so the computer was pretty busy when it suddenly died. It came back up a couple tines and I was able to receive the internet signal for a minute when it died the last time. After that, it will not boot. I can use a little help here

    Thanks

    Fred

Thanks for the advise. I wander if the computer will not boot because is not getting a signal from an operating fan. I will get the fan and will keep you posted.

Yes they do have thermal protection and if you leave it sit it should come back on if the fan doesn't move then it's just going to do it again till it's replaced.

well here's the deal, if the fan is not turning you do risk of overheating i would replace that first, then troubleshoot if thats not the main cause.

My Dell Inspiron M5030 shuts down suddenly...

Overheating When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

It sounds like your system might be running hot. Do you hear the fan running? If so it will turn on after it has cooled off, but once it gets hot it will turn off. If you immediately try to turn it back on, it won't work until the system has cooled off.

Laptops overheat because of the following problems:
1. Dust has clogged the Fans, Vents, CPU & Heat Sink Area
2. The FAN has stopped working
3. The Thermal Paste around the CPU and HeatSink has either dried up or is too thin to keep the system cool.

Try a can of compressed air and blow out the areas you can get to around the vents. You'll have to take the laptop apart to get to the Fan, CPU and Heatsink

DELL 8400 MAKES A LOUD FAN NOISE AND WONT BOOT

There are 2 basic fans in Dell tower one for the power supply and the other for the Processor. If your computer is not booting then the Processor fan is most likely to be the culprit. What could be happening is that the Processor fan is no longer turning fast enough to cool the processor, so normal the processor when it over heats there is either protection to switch off the computer automatically or the computer won't boot. The best thing is to change the fan and make sure it is working properly but checking on the cables that they won't entangle on top of the fan to impede it's movement. You can easily damage your processor if the fan is not working properly.

Most BIOS are set purposely by the owner. A lot of BIOS passwords I have seen that are default is "clear". If you cant get into it that way, you will have to find a way to open it up and remove the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS.
