Hp psc director window does not open in windows 7

hp psc director does not open in windows 7 (so I can scan a document), and pressing scan button on printer does not do anything either.

a window comes up saying that there is known compatability issues, do you still want to run the program?

'hp photo and imaging' shortcut does open, but the icon / button for scanning also do not work (it also isn't visible - just a smaller button of what appeared in XP with no graphic / picture on the icon)

the printer does print (the drivers are present for that), but the scanning tool is not fuctional as it must require program link-up with windows 7.

is there a work-around?
