Question about Radio Shack Pro-96 Scanner
My pro 96 works great but the screen has blacked out.
Standers420 just saved me a costly (and more imporantly hassle-filled) RS repair experience. I have a Pro96 with the exact same symptoms. In my case, all I did was take it apart per Standers420's instructions and blow a little air into the vicinity of the ribbon cable and made sure the connections were tight and it solved the problem completely - didn't even have to take the cable out and do the trimming etc. (which did scare me a bit). Also - it's important to note that on the Pro96 you must take it COMPLETELY apart - remove the back and then actually separate the board from the front of the scanner to get to the cable in question. After you have it properly disassembled you should have three parts: The back plastic cover, the main circuit board (connected to the front with a two-pin cable and multiple non-cable pin connections) and the front section which has it's own circuit board covered with a black plate. At the top of the front section is the cable in question. Also - obviously, when reassembling, it's important to make sure all the pins line up between the middle and front circuit boards. I didn't do this the first time and thought I had fried the scanner when I turned it back on. But I realligned the two sections and all was well.

I had the same problem with my Pro 96 display not displaying and followed thtough with Standers420's suggestion of taking the scanner apart and checking the ribbon wire from the board to the display. I put a little contact cleaner on my finger and kinda worked it into the leads on both sides of the wire, near each connection. Very carefully I might add. IT WORKED!! And it's really easy to do as well. So now for the first time in over 7 month's I have functionality back with my scanner. Because without the display, you can't actually use it to it's full capabilities. Thanks, Standers420!!

Take it back for repair or open it up, find the SMALL ribbon cable where it attaches the display to the board, release from connector, use SHARP scissors to cut 2mm STRAIGHT across, clean conductors, replace in connector and secure, reassemble
known issue for 96, 97, and the base units also

You might try adjusting the contrast -- it's in the manual.
