Question about Toshiba 36AF43 36" TV

1 Answer

My set has deveolped an intermittent high pitch squeal.

Sometimes cycling the power will stop the squeal temporarily but it usually comes back. Is this something that is worth repairing? The TV works fine otherwise.

Re: My set has deveolped an intermittent high pitch...

It always nice when the high-voltage circuit gives you fair warning of impending doom. Have the high-voltage (flyback) transformer replaced now before it fails catastrophically and wipes out other stuff with it. There are other things that could make noise too, same advice applies to them.
Hope ya fix it!

High pitched squeal

Does the squeal come from the TV cabinet or the speaker?
If from the cabinet , it's most likely the Horizontal high-voltage section of the set.
Find someone that's good with hand tools, unplug the set from the wall outlet, let it sit for a good 30 minutes.
have someone open up the back of the set and dust out and vacuum out any dust from inside the set.
Put back together and try it out.

RCA Model f27650 High pitch squeal

the high pitch squeal indicates shorted component/s. the transformer goes hot co'z its being overloaded by the shorted component, it too could be the one creating the squeal!!

if you have experience with electronic troubleshooting, try to test some of the components particularly on the secondary part of the transformer.
Be careful and make sure the TV set is unplugged.
test for shorted diodes and transistors, if you're in doubt of your readings try to desoldering one leg of the diode then proceed with the testing/measuring. replace any of the bad components you find exactly with same part number or replacements with the same rating.

spend more time on it resoldering some other cold soldered components.

High pitch

I have never heard a tube make noise when there is a good picture. Anyway, the noise has to be a transformer ringing or oscilating. They make a high pitched squeal when they have a loose winding or their cover is loose. You probably won't be able to feel or see anything loose on these transformers The power supply switching transformer is the first to look at. Take a hot glue gun and just cover the thing...especially at the base of it. The next (and only other) one is the horizontal drive transformer. It is located close to the high voltage transformer( biggest thing on board and usually in back or corner of the PCB.This one wont squeal) The horizontal drive transformer is about the size of a large marble and is encased in a black plastic cover. Cover it with hot glue also.
If you take the back off you will probably be able to localize where the squeal is coming from. You will probably need a signal to hear the noise also. After you find where it is coming from UNPLUG the set before doing any hot gluing!!!!
If you 're not up to this procedure take it to a technician. Your tube is not going bad and the set is definitly worth repair. Simple fix!! Good Luck!!

Sanyo tv making high pitch noise from loose cable connector

The noise is coming from the fly-back transformer. By moving the cable connector you move the main board. Unplug the TV and remove the back. The transformer has a red wire going to a rubber cup at the top of the picture tube. Looking at the transformer you will see a dough nut shape with a metal piece going through it .. Drive some tooth picks between the dough nut and the metal core. That should reduce or stop the ringing.

My rca tru flat is NFG

The high-pitched squeal usually indicates that the horizontal drive circuit has failed as a result of a dead line-output transistor. This symptom indicates that the control circuit of the main power supply is trying to over-compensate for a greater than usual secondary current. Certainly, an inspection of the line-output transistor will show that it's most likely dead. Sometimes instead of the squeal you will hear hiccups instead. Focus your attention on the horizontal circuit.

Samsung slimfit television 30"

In this model the horizontal drive coil vibrates and makes a high pitch squeal. Most times it is intermitent. Touching on the coil with something (non electrical, like wood) will make it stop or change it's pitch. The fix my shop uses: It's not to technical, but, we put fingernail polish around the coil. It's a remedy I've used for decades and has always worked. Some shops use a hot glue gun. With the back open you can hear the coil to locate it. When fixing the problem have the set unplugged. When a technician is working on a television while it's plugged in. He uses only one hand and stays away from the high voltage.

High pitch sound for Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-27HS420 27" TV

The high pitch squeal you hear is usually caused by a coil vibrating, normally in the horizontal circuit. I've also seen the ferrite bead on the horizontal output transistor do this, but, it is rare. I normally will repair this by finding the coil and "tightening" it. To tighten a coil, technicians use different chemicals, such as, a hot glue gun, rubber silicone or even finger nail polish. I will find the coil that screams by starting with the usual suspects and using a wooden dowel, barely touch the coil and if the pitch of the noise changes, then, thats the coil that needs repaired. If you do not know your way around the inside of a television, I never recommend you do so, since, this procedure must be done with the set turned on and you poke your hands around the inside of the set by the high voltage circuit. Hope this helps your decision.
