Pioneer powers off when face plate opens.

Hi. I recently started having problems with my pioneer deck in my car. It has a fold down faceplate and when that opens and folds down I lose power to the unit (like I've shut off the ignition) and the deck returns to it's original closed position where it regains power which relays it to open again. This cycle goes on and on unless I detach the faceplate.

I did find that if I hold the face closed with my hand and don't allow it to open and fold down, the unit will just close back up and the radio/cd everything works fine. So basically works great in closed position, won't power up in open position. Also, I do notice for a split second when it opens up before powering off, the graphics display comes on which would indicate the unit is functioning ok in that regard.

Thanks. Is this something I could fix or should I think about getting a new stereo?

  • Reidman Jan 05, 2008

    Thanks Guys.

Duncan, I found that partstore.com before I read your post here and ordered 2 cables, an extra for "down the road". 25$ for both w/ shipping. Had to do a lot of searching but finally found the right part. I guess I should feel lucky that cable lasted 3 years after what I've read online.

My first guess would be that the ribbon cable between the flip face and the mother board has gone bad. This is a very, very common problem. I'd suspect that above everything else at this point.

Try partstore.com or the Pioneer website in the support area. You
should have no problem finding a replacement cable. I would guess
off the top of my head that with shipping costs added in you should
only have to pay around $20 to get your radio going again. Good
luck. By the way, when you take out the old ribbon be sure to
make a mental note of how it is oriented (top to bottom and front to
back) so that you can install the new one correctly. Also note
that the sockets that the cable go into will need to be gently opened
before you remove and/or install the new cable. This is called a
zero insertion force socket. ZIF for short. Don't damage
the socket or a new cable will not help you. Good luck.

I agree. ,Thats a pretty connon issue. If you hunt ebay or some electronics supply places or hound pioneer yourself you should be able to find a kit with a new ribbon cable ...put it in., id say you have a 98% chance that the ribbon cable will fix you up..

Pioneer premier deh-p880 prs faceplate opens when you turn car off

The face folds down to give you the option to remove the face if you want. It will return to the upright position a few seconds later whether you remove the face or not. There should be a tab on the underside of the face you can push should you decide to detach the face from the chassis.

Hello there, my car audio detachable faceplate has been stolen. it was no new, so I dont want to pay for its replacement, but also still cant afford my favourite car audio. I wonder if I could run this...

No with out the faceplate which has the main control module for the unit there is no way to run this unit. The face of the deck actually has some value. An you couldnt even find a face plate if you wanted to. If i were you just go online and buy a 40$ jvc or something there super cheap and have all the same features as that model an more like usb flash drive attachemen and audio inputs. An if it gets stolen it wont matter as much cause its only a 40$ deck.

Another one with Faceplate buttons not working?

The capacitors in these plates tend to burn out quickly for being so hot and lack of air cooling circulation. You can test all connection pins on the deck and faceplate with an ohmmeter in ohm setting to see which pins is not sending 25-30 ohms or 5 volts of power

Display not working

I have the same problem. There's a little ribbon cable behind the contacts for the faceplate. It gets folded as the face plate motors in and out and eventually breaks like mine did. I'm fixing it tonight and then I will disable the motorization. Followed by NEVER BUYING A PIONEER AGAIN. I reccomend you do the same.

Pioneer deh - p9600mp

An install gone bad. Something is hindering free movement of the face plate open mechanism. Closely inspect the top edge of the bezel, is the face plate trim ( thin plastic ornamental frame covering the ugly aluminium mounting sleeve) snapped securely back in place? has it been fitted upside down?, is it deformed?.

You can't find faceplates for card decks since that will defy the safety feature.

Pioneer deh-p850mp problem

Check the ribbon cable on the inside that connects the two parts.

You will need to remove the faceplate and open up the Rear of the unit.
If you bought it used, theres a good chance that the ribbon is in fact broken. If its new, check the connections on the ribbon cable.

It is a chronic problem with most all PIONEER units that fold down / out.

Best of Luck.

Screen will not open

I have the same problem and found it is the ribbon cable to the faceplate holder. As the plate folds down it breaks the connection in the bad part of the cable and the deck doent see the faceplate, thinks it's been removed and begins to close. As it is closing the ribbon cable straightens and makes connection again. Hope this helps. Kkarma
