I have an IBM t40 laptop that i got for christmas and the "u " key came off. I looked on other websites and it says to just press down on the key, but this one has some kind of hooky thing that is supposed to slide into the key. However, i tried their advice, and the key would only slide in lopsided. And then it would come off. Again. I am really pissed because i heard that youu need some kind of special tool to fix it.

Hi. I would suggest that you use a different computer and go to the Lenovo Driver Support website which you can download every software and drivers that you need for your computer. Here's the website consumersupport.lenovo.com , it will just ask you to type in the serial no. of your machine and the exact type and model and from there it will give you all the drivers for your laptop. Hope This Helps
If you re-installed windows XP - you will also need to download drivers for the PC - Video, audio, chipset, modem, network etc
Heres a list of all drivers for a T40 http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-46258#modem
Goto to device manager - you will see yellow? or ! for devices that need drivers, some will just be unknown
how to get to device manager Press the Windows key (bottom left of the keyboard} and at the same time press the R key, now in the search box that appears - type devmgmt.msc
If the modem is an external modem for internet access - comment back with make and exact model
Sounds like you hit the Fn and another combination and dimmed the brightness down to black or turned off the light with another Fn combo. Reversing by pressing Fn and one of the keys that looks like a light should do the trick to get it back.
