We have a Dell Photo 966 and are not able to print with the device. We recently had Wondows-7 installed but the printer still does not work on the new system software as well as Vista. We have tried to print a test page but to no luck. Some of the questions it ask are: is the power on, is the USB cable connected, unplug the power and reconnect, check your firewall, restart the computer. We've done all of this but still no luck. HELP!!!!!

Did you do an in place upgrade or a custom install of Win7? What is your printer status in the printer and faxes window? If you see an exclamation point, it may be that you need to install an updated driver. Often you can let the Windows troubleshoot device fix the issue successfully. In that same printer and faxes window, check if you have files in the print spooler. You may need to clear the old queued files.

If you can't delete them directly the spooler window, you may need to stop the spooler and restart it. In XP, this was easy in the command prompt window (Command run works but you do one line each time. In Vista and probably in Win7 you'll have to do this as administrator. Assuming the spooler commands haven't changed, type "net stop spooler" (enter) then "net start spooler" (enter) without the quotes. (I know this worked in 2K and XP; I've never checked it in Vista or Win7.)

In addition, many USB printers need to have the USB cable removed from both the printer and the computer when you turn off and unplug the printer to reset the printer.

A final step to try is running the following patch from Dell: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R166245&SystemID=PRN_ALL_A966&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=11887&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=2&libid=40&fileid=224506; this totally removes the printer from your computer. Then you can reinstall it after rebooting the computer (wait until it tells you to restart).
