My wireless portion of my router has not been working, and a reset has not helped. I was told by an on-line help section that my firmware may need to be updated.

has the wireless settings been enabled on the router? what brand and model it is?

If you can still access the router setup page, yes doing a firmware upgrade will be a good thing to do here to correct the wireless problem, to download the firmware you can go to linksys.com and just select your routers model and proceed with the download and with the update....
