i have just purchased an acer notebook and the microsoft office disk, but i can't find the dvd drive to insert the disk. do I need to purchase an external drive separetely?

Refer to the documentation that came with your computer to make sure it came with a DVD drive. If in fact it came with a drive then look at the sides and front of the notebook for a rectangular button and press it while the computer is on and booted up at that point the drive should open.
