In order to save you some headaches, just go online or to a local shop and buy a Linux compatible NIC. Check the the HCL on redhat.com and then search for a specific NIC or for a specific NIC chipset that works with RH. I buy my NICs from a shop here in town for $9. They work fine with Linux.
The reason why you can't detect a modem is because you're using a WinModem. By definition it wont work with Linux. You need a PCI Hardware modem or a externel Modem. Again use the HCL on redhat.com & pricewatch.com to find a modem.
Remember you're coming from the Windows world where almost all hardware sold in stores works with Windows. Linux is more tight with issues of hardware compatibility. You should use the HCL, it makes life much easier.
