There are gray spots appeaing on my screen that are about 1" to 3" across. It looks like the screen needs to be cleaned or a mirror needs to be cleaned. I am also getting the "fan" noise which will go away if I turn the tv off and on 2 or 3 times.

LCD screen is quite different with crt screen. You should be careful while do cleaning. Unplug the power supply before do cleaning.
How to clean lcd screen:
You can use isopropyl alcohol, hexane, petroleum benzine, glass cleaner with ammonia free.Apply the liquid to soft and clean cloth then wipe your screen. Repeat the steps until your lcd clean
Grease look on screen? Just use dampen cloth with water instead use above liquids as the may smear the contaminant across the screen.
If the splotches are a shawdowy black and look like mold growing between the Lens, its most likely dirt or water spots on the bottom of the large mirror. I cleaned mine and missed a few water spots on the bottom of the large mirror and the splotches (spots) showed on the screen. Other than Dirt, or water spots, There is nothing else that I can think of that would cause this. Unless the Someone has cleaned the screen and it soaked up between the lenes. But it Takes about 30 minutes to disassemnble, give it a good cleaning and put it back together.
Actually I need you to do this... while the tv is on, go to the service menu, if the menu also has those twinkleish spots.. it's most probable to be your dmd board, if not, it's probable to be your digital video board
The HD-ila sets accumulate a lot of dust in the light engine. The worst offender is the little fold mirror just under the lens. I take my set apart about every 8 months or so to clean all the dust from the light tunnel and all lenses, mirrors, diffusers etc. The picture really regains it's pop when this is done. Unless you are a skilled technician though, I would recommend against attemptimg this procedure as you need to disconnect the individual color lcds. Check with a local service center to get it properly cleaned.
The gray spots are caused by dust on your lens, very easy to clean.
Power down the TV.
If you open the right side access panel (right side as you are looking at the front of the TV) you can see it in the middle, it's not very big. Using a scratch/lint free cloth, gently wipe off the lens or use a vacuum to **** up the dust being careful not to actually touch the lens.
Replace the access panel and enjoy your spot free screen.
those are going to be dust spots on the LCD panels internal to the optical engine. i suggest that you take the screen off and take off the panel i nthe middle of the tv with 2 screws in it and there will be an area that has 3 metal fins covering thin orange ribbon cables. the 3 square objects at the end of those ribbon cables will be the LCD panels spray wiht air compressor unitl clean and that should greatly help your problem.
