Question about NetGear Wireless-G USB Adapter (WG111NAWG111US)
Hello...I bought the Net Gear wirless G USB 2.0 adapter for my sons laptop and after we installed it...it showed there was a connection beween it and our router....problem is I can not get on the net. Any suggestion or answers would be Great!
Jane -- several things are required for internet access.
Lets go through step by step and assure the pieces are in place.
I will assume you have a second machine working with the router (wired or wireless does not matter). I would like you to try the following on both machines at let me know what happens.
First you can connect to the router and not have access to the internet. This first to determine the IP configuration values are correct for your network. (assumes Windows XP and probably Vista) - using the working machine
Click Start then All Programs the Accessories then Command Prompt a new window will open -- in that window type the following (one space only before the /)
and press enter -- record the following in the responses
IP Address --------------- probably 192.168.0.?
Subnet Mask ------------ probably 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway -------- probably 192.168.0.1
DNS Address(es) ------ may be more than 1
on your son's laptop do the same -- you should see the following if the configuration is right.
IIP Address --------------- probably 192.168.0.?
Subnet Mask ------------ same as working machine
Default Gateway -------- same as working machine
DNS Address(es) ------ same as working machine
Now test the connection to the router
in the same window as before enter the following command (replace the 192.168.0.1 with the default gateway from the working machine if different)
The working machine should display 4 messages with elapsed times indicating the ping works.
Your son's machine may display 4 timeout messages indicating it does not work. If the ipconfig above is wrong especially in matching areas to the working machine that could explain the problem. It could also be that the adapter requires additional wireless configuration such as a WEP or WPA password or passphrase, or connection to your network name (SSID) if it is hidden.
Please respond to this issue with a comment telling me what matched in the two ipconfigs and whether or not the ping works hopefully yes at least on the working machine and I will probably be able to provide a solution to the problem.
