Go to the below link, You have all what is needed to upgrade your OS to Windows Server 2003, You have the migration tools download link on this page, select the migration tool depending on Whether you are using Active Directory or Local Users. Ready the Guide carefully. Before you do anything first plan what you are going to do and then execute the plan step by step. Upgrading is not just like that. Because you might get problems later. Please try to enter safe mode.
Under safe mode please create a new user.
Give that user admin rights.
Then reboot and login with that new user name.

Features of active directory

Active Directory think of it has management system for all network LAN PCs in your domain. You can add users to certain enterprise groups, you can disable accounts, push and pull software application better then you can in SMS domain. I use to to clone user accounts or create new user groups. Very easy to learn. To install on Server requires a domain, DNS. If you're using Windows Server 2003 and setup the server to manage active directory all the options for the installation process will appear for installation. There are a lot of info online and in books if you need more info. There are training classing offer at MS Solutions Centers.

Logging on to server

You need to go into administrative tools and look for group policy.

In the local computer policy
Computer Configuration
Windows Settings > security settings > Local policies > user rights assignment. In the right hand pane find the policy for "Allow log on locally" Set the user accounts for those users which are allowed to log on interactively on the server. Be careful you dont lock the administrator account out.
Use in conjunction with the "Deny logon locally policy" if you need to.
Hope this helps
