Hitachi 50UX11K wavy pic rolls

I have a Hitachi model 50UX11K which has a very wavy picture, although excellent color and contrast. The picture also tends to roll, even when the
ver hold control is adjusted. It had sounded like a bad comb filter, so I changed
to the S-Video input which is know to circumvent comb filter problems.
However, there was little or no change of the symptoms.

No, I have not replaced any components.

I am surprised thatthe S-Video cable bypass is still being suggested. I Have already tried this, and it had not effect. Doesn't this experiment confirm that the problem is NOT the comb filter.

The problem is worst when the set is cold, and indeed it used to get better after 10-20 minutes, but no longer does. The set is from 1992, but sat in a room and had been used only occasionally until about a year ago. The problem started a couple of months, and at that time letting the set warm up was enough to make it viewable-actually very good, but not any more. I assume the warranty has long expired.

Yes, I orginally saw that page and was encouraged by it. I then contacted FixYa to try to confirm this, giving my own descriotion of the symtoms, and was told that "Yes, it was definitely a comb filter problem."

  • stealneil Jan 03, 2008

Actually, I had said I used it A LOT in he last year, but not much prior to that.
The S-video cable may improve the problem, but
    doesn't eliminate it.
Does the use of the S-Video input completely
circumvent the comb filter, becaues, again,
    I am already doing this.
    --Neil

  • stealneil Jan 03, 2008

I would be willing to try replacing the SMT caps if I were more confident that the comb filter is involved, since I thought that the S-Video would be bypassing it.
    --Neil

  • stealneil Jan 05, 2008

If the cap(s) on the vertical control ckt are not surface mount, I might not be much of a problem for me to replace them(it), if I could get a service manual without paying an arm and a leg. I was only able to download the first page of what seemed to be a 10 page manual at the link you provided. Do I have to pay for other pages? It wasn't clear what was going on there after I uncompressed it with what I thought was the proper utility.
    --Neil

  • stealneil Jan 05, 2008

Sorry. I just looked again, and the service manual for my model is $30. I would helpful
to know if the caps are thru hole before I spend the money. Thanks.

Hi Neil.
Do your TV image go back to normal after 10-20 minutes after being turned on, or does it stay like that for a long period of time.
When did you buy your TV? (how old is it?)(Do you still have the warranty?)
How long ago did that problem started?

    Hi again Neil.
If you say it have been used rarely in the last year and its was from 1992.
Then im guessing it is either the convergence module, or the connectons inside the TV are cold or rusty. If you have experience in TVs or feel confident i will recomend you to open it up and solder what might seem rusty or broken.
If not, then call a technician because the problem you have cant be solved by pressing specific buttons or so, It have to be opened up and fixed.

  • Santiago Vallejo
    Santiago Vallejo Jan 03, 2008

ah, yes it can also be the comb filter problem.

  • Santiago Vallejo
    Santiago Vallejo Jan 03, 2008

If you want to open it up you can try to "Take out the comb filter and
replace the surface mount electrolytic capacitors (I think there were
around 4 of them) on the comb filter and put it back in the
motherboard. MCM sells a kit If I'm not mistaken with capacitors
that fix this problem as well as the picture in picture problem which
    these same sets have."

Neil you can use the S-Video as darklord say, to bypass the combifilter. im not sure if that will work, but you can try it,
well if your TV is already broken or failing i guess you cant breake it. detailed pic of S-Video ends*

Sounds like the vertical controll circuit, it could just be a capicator that is on that circuit. as per the comb filter its very difficult to repair as the capacitors are micro and difficult to solder unless your soldering skills is very good. The is a place that repairs these comb filters www.ptscorp.com i am not sure at what cost though. At any case you can bypass the comb filter by
1.) getting an s-video adapter for your vcr
2.) connect the vcr to the tv using the s-video adapter
3.) change the channels using your vcr.

I'd rcommend you get a professional to have a look at it and repair it as it is much to difficult to repair your self even if you have the service manual

  • Rishi Roshan Ali Jan 03, 2008

If you bypassed the comb filter the its the vertical controll circuit (if the lines are vertican) orthe horizontal controll if the lines are horizontal. u see eletrocicanally inclined and you should be able to fix this as its just capicators. you can download your service manual for detiled instructions on how to do this.. ..

  • Rishi Roshan Ali Jan 07, 2008

The manual is aviable for download but you will have to pay for it unfortunately... that is the only free one i was able to find.. chances are its only a capicator, you can use a multi tester and check for contuinity ,,, but there is also a chace it could be the ic.. HOLD on a bit let me look for another manual post back in a couple of minutes

  • Rishi Roshan Ali Jan 07, 2008

http://www.eserviceinfo.com/equipment_mf... here you go, there are multiple parts to the manual so you will need to download them all..

  • Rishi Roshan Ali Jan 07, 2008

not all the files you see there , just the ones pertaining to your model, you'll see it as part1.zip or part2.zip etc

    the main link is

Hitachi 50UX11K wavy pic

Since the comb filter is discontinued is will be best to bypass it by using the S-video input especially if you are on satellite receiver or use a composite to S-video adapter if you don't have dish. You might get the adapter at Radio Shack or shop online at Circuit City or Best Buy

Screen is distorted on rear projection hitachi

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

f0add3d.jpg

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

93a1209.pngCONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

To fix or not?? 1990 Hitachi big screen

Sorry the answer is no. If the rolling pic was the only problem you had then yes throw a new signal board in and move on. In this case your picture not being as sharp as it used to be will also be tubes going bad..18 years not a bad run on three tubes that run extremely warm. Have fun on your upgrade to lcd or dlp proojection this will cost less than the fix of your tv.

use the advanced options page and reset the factor blue and red convergence defaults then do re apply the auto color defaults color at first it seemed very red (which is good because red was the missing factor in the green picture) but after reseting all the color and tints to the normal ranges I then reset the color auto correct again and all seems fine.
