I have a HP Pavilion dv2426us. The power meter says plugged in not charging. The battery has been working fine but when I turned it off last week it has given me this message. Any ideas?

if you have the power indicator on the laptop i would replace the battery if you do not have the indicator then you may not have any power from the ac adapter check for voltage using a volt meter.
It sounds like your power supply is not charging the battery and the battery is dead (enough to try to turn on, but not more than that). check the power adapter output with a volt meter. Make sure the battery charge light is on when the power adapter is connected. if all looks good there, try removing the battery and turning the unit on while plugged in. if none of these work, post a reply here to this solution.
I have had this issue with a few HP laptops.
Does the lighning bolt light up on the laptop to indicate charging?
Maybe try unplugging the power adapter and battery, press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds, pug in the battery and power adapter. In Windows click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Power Options. Click on Power Meter Tab and check the startus of the battery (i.e. Charging, not present etc)
Batteries fail alot, and what they dont tell you is that modern Li-on batteries get damaged if you leave your computer plugged in all the time.
You need to charge the battery and then run it on battery power.
Sounds like your battery is knackered, you can get replacements. I googled your model and found 1 for £23 http://www.1pcdiy.com/hp-compaq-laptop-batteries/1481/
Hi, when using the (AC Power Adapter), it is important that once the (Battery) is fully charge; to do one or the other. Stop! using the AC power, shutdown the computer, and unplug the AC power; use the battery (only), or remove the battery, and use (only) the AC power. Note: Using both power sources this can cause damage to the battery, by over charging, and possibly over heating the computer. Thanks paul7of9
Check your mains adapter plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard. This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. I suggest you get a quote first.
pull the battery and check it with a dc power meter that measures voltage if you got low/no power you'll have to buy another battery/ also try using the power cord w/o the battery installed. it theres no light anywhere means the ac power converter /supply has died.
discharge your battery compleately and then charce your battery for 16 hrs add then discharge compleately and charge till 100% batt level approx 2hrs that will help
