Mine is Thinkpad T40. 5 months ago, it's gone wrong. I removed battery for long time (couple of hours). When I plugged the battery back, and turned on, the fan run well, the power LED and the battery LED lighted, but nothing more. I had to bring it to IBM, they said it was motherboard problem, need 2 weeks and 100$ to fix. While, my friend's laptop (T40p) went wrong too, but he did nothing but left it on his desk for 2 weeks. When I had may T40 back, it worked, but, at the same time, my friend's T40p worked, too, without fixing a thing.
And 2 days ago, I left my T40 without battery or power adapter, once again, it stopped. Exactly the same as the first time. I don't know why. Battery is good, back-up battery is good, too (2.8V). Also, my motherboard is my old one (as before I brought to IBM distributor).
Can anyone explain this? Should I change the motherboard, or fix it, or do nothing as my friend did?

I took my laptop to a technician. After a day examining it, he said there was no solution for that problem. Meanwhile I bought a new power cable (not the power adaptor, just the cable from the power outlet to the adaptor). I left my laptop at my shelf for about 3 weeks deciding what to do. When I finally decided, I turned it on (with the new cable) and it is working again without any problem.

It sounds as you have motherboard issues. If you turn on and get nothing else, I think you need a motherboard.
1) check battery charge? If you are using a power adaptor is the light staying on when you plug in the adaptor?
If not then the adaptor SOCKET on the motherboard may be loose.
The switch may be faulty also..
If not that...you need a new board I think...and keep reading on here as someone may solve the problem.
