Power Issue Hi...my Miele vacuum cleaner (S314) will not turn on, unless I lean it on its side (the side that the power switch is on). I took it apart and the wires are all well attached, and I do not see any issues with the connectors. Is this a common problem with an easy fix?
Thanks!
Todd
My Miele vacuum cleaner (S314) wont turn on either. Have taken it apart, and trying to diagnose the problem. No burnt marks to indicate overheating. Will look at the cord reel contacts and see if they can be cleaned or bent to make better contacts.
Called tech support at Miele, and was told to look between the cord reel and the board, and if it wasn't there, to look at the board. The board only looks like it is 3" x 3". No solution yet. Dave

Could be the cord reel causing the problem. Sometimes the contacks on the inside of the reel loose contact and won't conduct. If this is the problem, then you will have to replace the reel cord asm. Part # 06777540, may cost about $150 approx.

There can be a couple of things that would shut down your vacuum cleaner. A wiring fault inside the cord retractor, power switch has failed, the motor armature has failed or the brushes on the motor have either worn down past their serviceable life or jammed (unless the motor has burned out - you would notice the smell). If you aren't electrically savvy I wouldn't attempt to disassemble your vacuum cleaner, but all of the above issues can be fixed at home. Take it into a shop for repairs. I have serviced the motors on a number of different vacuum cleaners successfully without having to spend money on repairs except to replace a bad on/off switch for a few dollars.
Most likely the speed control board has failed. The solution for this is to replace the electronic unit unless you know of someone who can diagnose and repair circuit boards. The part is common and easily replaced for around $60. Miele's website can point you in the right direction for a service center, or tell me your zip code and I'll look it up for you.
Most likely the problem is with the cord winder. This is the most common problem with Mieles. It is actually the most common problem with any vacuum with a cord winder. A Miele repair center should not change you to look at the vacuum and tell you what is wrong with it. The Red Star was a great model and if the powerhead is still in goood condition I would get the vacuum repaired. If it is the cordwinder they can usually be repaired and it should cost about $75.00. If you need a new cord winder this will cost about $150.00. The top piece can be pryed off, however if it feels like it is switching than it is not jammed.
Hi
If the power head isn't working it may be clogged. Try taking it apart to see if threads and general dirt has got in at the sides. Also without the power head if the Miele still isn't working then its a possibility that the on switch wiring is either loose or check the plug at the end of the power cord.

Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Miele S251i Plus Bagged Canister Vacuum Miele white star canister vacuum - won't turn on,... Hi,
I have the above canister vac, which after my son tried to vac the stairs, it rolled down the stairs on him, but still worked, after turned off/on. Then after turned off maybe 10-15 mins., stopped working when we tried the switch. My father in law is our fix it guy, but still having a problem with the switch. Is there a wiring guide we could look at?
Thank you!

You can try to call the factory for the Miele S251i schematics / wiring diagram @ the phone number and website listed below or I put a few pieces of information listed below that might help. 1. The vacuum cleaner switches off automatically A temperature limiter switches the vacuum cleaner off automatically if it gets too hot. Some models have a warning light (triangle) which comes on to indicate that it has overheated. Allow the appliance to cool down for approx. 30 mins. and remove any blockages to the air path. 2. The "Change dustbag" indicator stays on even when a new bag has been inserted To ensure the dustbag change indicator gives a correct reading, lift the floor nozzle or power head off the floor slightly to prevent the vacuum created in the suction tube from influencing the reading. 3. The exhaust filter indicator is red Change the exhaust filter and then press "Reset" to switch off the indicator light. http://miele.com1-800-999-1360 Customer Care Toll-Free Contact Information For a repair order, please contact us at our toll-free number (800) 999-1360, Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 8:00pm, Eastern Standard Time (EST). www.AVACcorp.com 1-800-328-9430
