My computer fails to identify my WD 1tb external hard drive when I plug it in the USB. It also does not show up on Disk Manager. However, it still lights up and I hear it turning. How can I get the computer to recognize it again?
I fixed that problem with a WDC My Book Home 1TB in Windows 7:
The drive was recognized in computer management and in device manager but no drive letter was allocated while connected with a e-sata cable.
1.in computer management > storage > disk management 2.rightclick drive 1 or wathever the number of the WDC drive (which should be basic at this time) 3.select 'convert to dynamic disk' 4.drive should get a drive letter 5.format (warning: all data get lost, but you can download original software from wdc.com)

I recently reinstalled my OS (Windows XP Media center edition). Ever since i reloaded the OS my WD My Book Home edition 1TB external HDD stopped showing up in the windows explorer as a drive letter. The drive is listed under the Disk Management as "unallocated".
It was working fine before i reinstalled the OS. For example i backed up my documents from C: drive onto the external drive and i was able to access the drive and copy the files. Please note that before reinstalling the OS i didn't remove the file using the safely remove hardware option and also i didn't turn off the drive. I'm not sure if this is a partition table corruption issue.
My entire backup is in the file and it will be a great loss if i can't retrieve files from the disk. I would greatly appreciate your help in recovering the data from the disk.
