Question about HP 920 Plain Paper Fax

1 Answer

Not Copying Hi There...I haven't used the machine in quite awhile...I turned it on and it wouldn't copy so I followed the directions to unplug the cord and also unplug it from the outlet and then restart it to go back to default settings. The machine turns on like it's ready...I think one time it said Auto and the next time it said Manual. I load the document to be copied and it says Document Loaded, then I press copy and nothing happens; I've tried copy start as well...nothing. :( I also checked the printer cartridge and shook it a bit, it seemed to have liquid still in it so I don't think that's the problem. Any ideas? Since this is a pretty old unit, I hate to take it in to have it serviced, but I don't want to buy another unit if there's something simple wrong with this one. Thanks in advance for your response! Happy New Year! :)

Re: Not Copying

If it is an inkjet printer then the line that feeds the ink is dried up, may not be worth it, depending on how much you bought it for.

If it's a laser copy type (not good with names) the lasers might be covered with dust and dirt, or you might need to replace the copying arm thing.. that's if you have a similar one to mine

When using the ADF, the scanner doesn't move. The long rectangular platen glass on the left side of the machine is used, not the large glass. I believe that if you clean the long, thin piece of glass on the left side of the platen, your lines will disappear.

I keep getting a black line about 2 inches along the right side of the paper if copying as well any faxes sent are also getting that blac line. Brother fax machine intel 4750e

Well you said the Lines are present when you are copying and when you are sending from the fax unit. Copying and sending functions both uses the scanning unit. What you lift open the document feeder for original documents. In there you should see rollers and a glass. clean this glass with cotton swab and alcohol for left to right the entire glass. Close the unit and try copying or sending, documents should now be clean.

Make sure your page is turned the right direction. It could be copying the blank back side of your original.

Copying a doc said "check paper" half way

The scanner section of your fax may have one of the following;
  • Dirty sensor (use can of air to clean)
  • Broken sensor (call for service)
  • Dirty feed tires (use soapy water and cloth to clean)
These are the most common issues.

Has line down center of page when using ADFfor copying

Hi There,

There is a piece of glass that the machine uses to scan the page. it's like a 1/2 in wide, and the width of the paper.

This glass is dirty with a spec of toner or white out on it.

Clean this glass very good. you may have to use a razor blade, but be very careful not to cut the plastic around the glass or it will jam.

Copying Documents If you make copies of multiple documents at a time, the number of pages the fax can scan into memory varies depending on the scanning resolutions as follows: * STANDARD and FINE result in the same resolution when making copies
* If MEMORY FULL appears on the LCD when making copies, reduce the number of documents to be copied or reduce the amount of total copies.
  1. Lift up the document tray.

  2. Insert the top of the document, face up, into the ADF (1) until a beep is heard.
  3. Adjust the document guide to the width of the document.

  4. Press <Resolution> to select the resolution.
You can select [STANDARD], [FINE] or [PHOTO].
  5. Press <Start/Copy>.
  6. Enter the number of copies (up to 99) using the numeric buttons.
To make a correction to the number of copies, press <Clear> and re-enter the number.
  7. Press <Start/Copy>.
To stop copying anytime, press <Stop>. If the document does not eject, press <Start/Copy> for a few seconds, then the fax will feed out the document.
  8. The new resolution will remain until it is changed.

You should be able to open the machine up easily and see the jam. It is a very small unit and no plece for the paper to hide. Does the unit use a film ribbon to print from. If so, remove the ribbon to see the jam.
