You can get a live CD usually referred to as Rescue CD. With that CD you will able to boot from it and then scan the computer using the tools on that CD.
But I recommend you scan while the computer is not connected to any network or internet. If possible unplug the network cable. You can order the live CD from avast.com or you can search on internet for others other than avast.
Does it get stuck before launching windows? You could try going into 'Safe Mode'. After the PC finishes it's post test, start hitting the F8 key. This should take you to a screen with several options for starting Windows. Highlight the line for Safe Mode and hit enter. No guarantees it will let you into windows, but if it does, then you can look through your start menus, remove apps in control panel for any unrecognized programs. There could be something in your Registry, but you would need someone familiar with it. If you have a A/V app, you may be able to run it in safe mode. Good luck.
