Your the first person to help me with that question!!! Even HP-Compaq couldn't answer me, thay just wanted to sell me a newer computer. I already have an up to date computer but I wanted to upgrade this old compaq for my grand kids to use when they come over to visit us for surfing, gaming or whatever their thriving little minds can come up with! LOL, Again Thanks So Much... Larry

You can run XP on 384 MB of ram but it will be sluggish. The minimum requirements are 300 MB. You would be cutting it close.

A complete list of the minimum requirements can be found here.

    Memory problem

    Hi

Compaq Presario 700z notebook PC supports 128MB, 192MB, 256MB, 384MB PC 133 SyncDRAM (SDRAM). The Max Capacity is 384MB.

On this basis, I agree to upgrade the BIOS to support a 133Mhz (PC 133) memory module (DIMM).

At current DIMM capacity and prices, ensure the total memory capacity does no exceed 384MB. On the same note, a 512MB DIMM or two 256MB DIMMs are not supported. The best combination to achieve 384MB will be one 128MB and one 256MB DIMMs.
