I had tried to connect an external monitor to the laptop and it showed everything on the external monitor, clearly. Now, do you still think the solution is to fix either the screen, CCFL lamp, the wire, inverter or something else?

I also have this laptop model and I was having a problem where my HP xe3 gc was getting white dots much like a weak signal on your tv. What fixed mine was that I cut the wires that went to my inverter and made them longer so that the screen would show when you close the lid. And wow that fixed the problem not sure if it would fix your problem but worth a try just cut them and put them back together!! If you want to by in inverter then look and ebay you may save some money beware of not buying new! and also when you get the problem fixed make sure if you keep you laptop on all the time set the screen to shut of every 5 min that way this will keep your screen from staying on all the time making your new screen last longer!!

It sounds like the CFL backlight has failed or is starting to fail. These can be purchased from many places online. Replacing could be a bit tricky. Some laptops are a bear to open up, but for the most part they aren't too bad. You'll need to find out which size CCFL lamp you have. You may need to contact HP for this, or google for it.

Your inverter could also be going too which are about $70-80. I would doubt this is the problem though.

Fading colour

If your LCD TV or monitor has stopped working, or is displaying one of the following symptoms, then it's a candidate for some new capacitors
- Flickering screen
- Screen image disappears after several seconds
- Dim screen
- Slow start
- Power LED on, but no picture
- Unusual colors and/or lines
The primary cause of LCD TV and monitor failure is caused by faulty capacitors. You can examine the capacitors in your LCD TV or monitor and actually see if they are bad.
If they appear bulged on top, then they need to be replaced.
New capacitors will solve a host of problems in LCD monitors and TV's and will extend the life of your monitor or TV by several years.
Take it to a repair shop.

Screen trys to show desktop, but quickly fades to

Hello,

Since the power led button is on, the problem with your monitor is the that the picture board of your monitor has develop fault, that is why it tries to show your desktop and quickly fades away.

The picture board of your monitor is bad and will need to be replaced in other for it to display.

The best thing for you to do is to take your monitor to a local repairer or any service center within your vicinity to help with the replacement of your picture board because the fault is not something you can fix on your own in other not to complicate issues.

Take care.

I would check your graphics card control panel. You may have (or someone else) set the contrast or some other setting to low or high. If you are using nvidia you can run the optimization wizard.
