Won't work after replacing batteries

I replaced the batteries this afternoon because they were getting weak. After installing the new batteries, the mouse will not shut off (1), nor will the mouse respond with the cursor (2).

(1) The green power light on the bottom stays on. If you press the reset button, the power light will only stay off as long as the reset button is pressed.

(2) The cursor remains dormant on the screen, even when you move the mouse around on the desk.

Any ideas?
