Question about Sony STR-DE135 Receiver

1 Answer

Intermittent sound output and popping when first turned on

I have a Sony str-de135. When it is first turned on the sound cuts in and out along with a popping sound from the speakers, this will happen for about 30 minutes or less and then it will have a reliable audio output. Also during this first 30 minutes tapping on the back of the unit can affect the sound and popping. Please let me know what the problem might be.

I have a Sony STR-DE135 receiver and the speakers keep cutting out. what could be the problem?

Heat, loose speaker wires, excess volume, low load impedance?

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts and overloads by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced hands-on tech.

I have a sony STR-de135 receiver whlie looking for one problem created another. While the receiver was unpluged I touched and output transistor MN2488 and it sparked now the left channel sounds distorted so...

The capicitors in the unit are charged. Replacing the output transistor(s) is not a task for a novist. Capicitors, resistors, driver transistors and sometime preamp chips can also be bad as well. If all the bad components are not replaced the parts you replace could blow out again.

Want to play my ipod through sony str-de135 receiver

Get a headpone to rca cable (radio shack or best buy) and use any input on the rear of the receiver except phono. You will need to turn the ipod to near max volume.

protection is designed to protect the output transistors from, shorted speaker wires, shorted speakers, too low speaker impediance, make sure the amp is well ventilated.
turn the amp off for 1 to 2 hours to allow thermal reset if this fails most likley some internal damage has occured and the unit will need to be serviced

No sound out of left speaker

did the left channel work when u switched speakers, if so then the left speaker or wiring is a fault.if not then the output circuits on the amp are blown or the fuse is blown some amps have internal fuses in the output to protect the output transistors. unplug the power cord and take the cover off, look to see if u can find any fuses and check these for continuity u can hold these up to the light and u should see a fine filiment in one piece and not broken. these fuses sometimes blow just from age and use at high volume like a regular light bulb.If the fuse is blown replace with the same value else the output transistors will need to be replaced most likley along with the drivers.

My Sony STR-DE135 reciever has sever distortion on the right channel speakers (A&B) no matter which input is selected. I can not find any obvious fault on the board. Any tips to help me fix it?

It sounds like your receiver may have a damaged output IC. I'm assuming that you've already tried a known good speaker on the right channel but if not, that would be a good idea. Also check and verify that the speaker wire is not damaged and that the terminals at each end are securely fastened.

Good Luck,

Sony STR-DE135: No audio output

first, at turn on you should hear a relay click then a few seconds later a second click. if you should hear the two relay clicks then check to see if you have both A and B speakers on, if you do shut B speaker off. next check the tape monitor switch make sure that it is off. if you should not hear the second relay click you have a problem with the unit and needs to be repaired.
