Question about Garmin nuvi 350 GPS Receiver
Would like an update for my c330 --- gives me wrong directions to address entered. Apparently map is out of date.
What you have to pay for is new maps. Updates to the firmware are free. Garmin buys it's maps from a company called Nuviteq, I believe. The maps that are pre-loaded are only good until changes are made to roads or new developments are added. Since the maps are for the entire United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, they do not opt to give you free map updates. I do not know of any GPS company out there that is giving map updates free at this time.

Garmin puts out map updates on a regular basis. You must purchase these. The GPS comes loaded with maps that are current as of the date of production of the unit. It cannot "know" when new roads are paved and new subdivision are created without being "told" via map updates. The unit knows where it is in relation to the maps loaded on it by receiving signals from the GPS satellites in orbit. If things change, the maps must be changed in order for the unit to give you correct directions.

Garmin get their maps from a company called Navteq (NVT), headquarter located in Chicago, Illinois. This company is in the process of being purchased by Nokia (NOK).
Tomtom uses map produced by Tele Atlas, located in Amsterdam. Tomtom is in the process of purchasing Tele Atlas.
