Convergence Issue for RCA R52WH76...

Hey all,

New to the forum and have a question regarding the RCA R52WH7 Projection TV. Here's the scoop, the convergence is all messed up with a concave image as well. From what I have read, it is often caused by the FL231 Fuse going bad witch also causes the convergence option to drop from the menu.

The thing that confuses me about this is that I still have the convergence option on my menu, but it doesn't function. When I Select the option from the menu, it brings up the crosshairs to align, however, I can't move them. Could this still be related to the fuse? Any help would be greatly appreciated:)

- Alright, I checked the three fuse links both visually and via multimeter and they all checked out okay. Any other thoughts???

- It's my understanding that this problem could be related to the convergence ICs as the menu for convergence is still available within the menu, it just does not allow me to move the cross-hairs for alignment.

- Thanks, mrrepair, I'll check it out. As I had said before, I visually inspected the fuse as well as checked for continuity with a multimeter. I checked the fuse while it was still in series, though, so could that have affected my reading?

- Doing a little more research has revealed that it may be the flyback that is my problem. It could well be that the solder has cracked and broken loose on some of the pins of the flyback. I will check this when i get the chance and post back here with my results...

- I have inspected the solder points of the flyback, and I can't tell if they need resoldering. One of the pins is slightly discolored about the base (the point where the solder meets the board) but I don't know if this is the issue. I will try resoldering it this weekend. Also, I have checked and rechecked those fuses as well as the capacitor at CP230 and they all seem to check out. Any other input out there?

Inst_Pudding,
Please check the fuse again. Do not just pop the cap off and visually inspect it. Even if the filament appears to be intact, it's probably not. Like ctf1800 said, it's the fuse.
You need to test the fuse for continuity.
The problem that you explained is due to the blown fuse. There are no convergence IC's in this set. I'm am 99.9% certain your fuse has blown.
Get the fuse here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220478092023
After you install the fuse, you MUST resolder the points at the flyback transformer which is located next to the fuse (red wires leading to it). Cracked & cold solder usually develops and will cause FL231 to fail again if you skip this step.

mine had the same problem. One fuse was bad. There are three red ones together. They are about the size of chicklet chewing gum. You can pull the red caps off to see if one is blown. My bad one was the middle one. I also replaced a capacitor but don't know if it was bad or not. Was told to do so while I had it open.

Try looking at the main board very near the flyback and you should see 3 fuse links (they look like hard capacitors) one of them is probably open causing lack or power to the convergence board by way of the ribbon seated close to the vertical output IC.

Mine had the same problem. Found CL029 had a hole blown in the end. Part is a rectangle shaped capacitor located on the PSD board (HV). Looking from the back of the Tv, the part is about 2.5" from the right side of this board and about 4" from the back of the television next to a large heat sink. The part is a dark grey box capacitor.
