Question about Symphonic ST419E TV

Lost picture TV turns on, but screen is black except for a bright line across the middle. Sound OK. The old control would have been "horizontal hold" but don't know if there is an adjustment. 27 inch TV, about four years old.

You have a vertical collapse. this is probably a vertical output IC. Also capacitors. But most of the time it gives some indication that it is going out. like picture shrinks first. But if it did not give you indication. Then it also could be a loose connection around this IC. If you can tap on board around this area and then it comes back normal then its just a loose connection. If not then IC and Caps and sometimes diode in this same area are bad.

Hello fannie90,

It looks like one of the sections of your TV set that controls deflection (the way your screen shows picture, horizontally and vertically) is defective. Not much you can do for this failure as far as adjustment is concerned. This is a relatively easy fix for a technically skilled person. You should contact reputable repair shops to get estimates and compare which option is best for you. Hope this helps.

Tv screen is black except for 1 horizontal line of color

The line is there because the vertical deflection unit - the one that spreads that line across the entire screen to form the image - has failed. Replacing it is a job for a professional, or at least an experienced amateur, and the parts will be quite difficult to find for such an old tv .

it could be an electrolytic capacitor or the vertical output I.C. in the vertical circuitry,if you remove the rear cover tap on the board in different places and see if the picture fills out or atleast jitters like it might fill out, then it could be just a cold solder joint, then remove the main board and resolder all joints and this should repair the condition you have

This could be a capacitor if your lucky but can also be the horizontal transistor. The repair could cost you between 60$ and 150$
My opinion; it's not worth it.

Horizontal Line through middle of TV screen

This is usually a bad elect capasitor or a bad solder connection on the vertical IC, The capasitors will be close to the vert chip..Sometimes you can clear problem with a light tap on the TV, if so then suspect bad solder.

TV: bright line across black screen for several hours.

vertical output ic needs to be resoldered. careful leaving that bright line displayed on the screen as this will cause a permanent phosphor burn into the tube. this can not be corrected once burned unless you replace the tube. mch

Problem with tv

Could be a horizontal output fault, faulty power supply, a simple dry solder joint or HVT. If you can hear arcing or smell an ozone odour, it will be the HVT which may cost a bit.

Without knowing the actual cause, it's impossible to say how much it would cost to fix it.... could be anywhere from $50 to $250 etc

Best to have it checked by a technician and get a quote to repair... then decide if you think it's worth it.

Toshiba is generally a reliable brand, so if you were happy with the picture quality before the fault occurred, it's probably worth repairing.

Cheers

Tv not working

this symptom, sometimes called the tube light effect, it is characterised by a bright thin horizontal line across the middle of the screen. this symptom is caused by a breakdown in the vertical deflection circuit. hence maybe the trouble maybe in the vertical oscillator, amplifier or output circuits. but if all i have said is not clear to you, better bring it to a qualified tv technician. good luck!

Blue tint and lines on screen.

Those lines sound like "retrace lines" and several things can cause them. The most common are shorts inside the picture tube and shorted semiconductors in the video driver circuits. They can also be seen if the blue screen voltage is too high or if someone has tampered with the screen voltage control.

Horizontal 'pinstripe' lines on all channels

sound like the screen control on the flyback is set just a little too high. the flyback has the red wire attached to the tube. the flyback has 2 small adjustable controls. if you look close enough 1 is marked focus & on is screen. turn the screen slightly to the left & look at your picture. the screen is like a master brightness & if it's up too high you will see what is called retrace lines. good luck.
