Question about Computers & Internet

Dell Laditude monitor stopped working.

Shut it down for the night. Machine boots ok, and if I get my nose very close to screen I can make out what is on the screen, but if you sit at normal range the screen looks black. (it is duhhhhh.) anyhow I have not tried connecting to another monitor as I am sure that will work, but that defeats the laptop.
I have tried the Fn/F8 keys and it is evidently set normal. I could see it in control panel and all looked normal.

Sound like the monitor needs replaced?

Yes, it sounds like somehow the back light behind the LCD has gone out, cheaper to replace the whole LCD then to replace the light itself, but do connect a desktop monitor to it before you go out and buy one, if it works fine then you know its the lcd, if it does not work then it may be the internal video card.

Dell optiplex 170l screen problems on shut down

Disconnect the monitor cable from the computer and power on the monitor. It has a built-in diagnostic program. If you see color bars floating around the screen then you monitor is O.K.

( Dell xps m1530 laptop ) Monitor blank, powers up but screen won't come on.

It ISN'T the LCD screen. Since you diagnosed with an external VGA monitor, you now know the problem is the laptop.

(When you connect an external VGA monitor to a laptop, you are bypassing the Video Cable, and LCD screen. You are connected directly to the laptop )

The basic Windows files aren't being found. The boot files. This may mean a bad Harddrive.

Do you have the Restoration CD Disk? Laptop on insert it into the optical drive tray, close the tray.
When asked choose - Repair. (Non-Destructive Installation)

If a checkdisk is done, you have bad sectors on the harddrive.
There IS a special procedure in replacing a harddrive.

Got Dell Inspiron 2650 2002 from a friend, free. Want to restore to factory settings. How? Installed Windows XP and Norton Anti Virus

Hi and welcome to fixya!

There are two ways to restore this machine to factory settings;

First is thru the Recovdery partition in the hard disk itself:

  • 1 Close any windows currently open and click the Inspiron's "Start" button. Select "Shut Down" and choose the "Restart" option.
  • 2 Tap "F8" when the Dell image appears on the screen. Continue tapping the key until the advanced boot menu loads.
  • 3 Scroll down to "Repair Your Computer" and press "Enter" to access the DataSafe local backup screen. Click "Next." Select "Dell Factory Image Recovery and DataSafe options."
  • 4 Click the "Restore without preserving new or changed files" radio button and click "Next." Click "Next" three more times and click "Restart" to restore the disk drive to its original condition. Follow the on-screen prompts to set your operating system settings.

If the hdd was already repartitioned or corrupted, the second option should work:

  • 1 Insert the Dell recovery disk in your Inspiron's optical drive and close the "AutoPlay" window when it appears. Shut down any other open programs. Click "Start" and select "Restart."
  • 2 Tap "F2" as soon as the Dell image appears on the laptop's screen. Scroll to the "CD-ROM" option and press "Enter." Tap any key when you see the "Press any key to boot" option.
  • 3 Press "Enter" when the setup screen appears. Press "F8" and highlight the Dell's hard drive partition. Press "Enter."
  • 4 Follow the instructions on the screen to choose the Inspiron's operating system options. Click "Finish" and remove the recovery disk from the optical drive. Click "Start" and select "Restart."
Hope this helps!

I have a dell inspiron 1501 and it will not boot up. Problem occured last night when black/grey vertical line showed up on the monitor and I had to manually power it down by hold down the power butten for...

Try booting the pc into safe mode with networking. If it will boot to safe mode then all is not lost. If it won't boot to safe mode, try to boot with the windows disc and go to the restore screen or go to the repair option and try to repair the windows startup.

When I boot up the screen is all colors and lines

It sounds to me like your cable is loose to the lcd or the video card is not properly 100 percent seeded into the mother board. Prolly the cable in one way or the other, perhaps bad cable.

Start up problem.

Does your laptop come with a recovery disc? If so, insert the disc, turn off pc, boot it up from the cd and do a start up repair.  Your OS start up is got corrupted. Don't worry, start up repair won't delete your data, it will only re install the OS start sequence.
Hope this helps.

Dell C400 will not boot using LCD screen when cold

I have seen this problem before, after booting to the external monitor go into the display settings and try setting the resolution to 1024 X 768 and the color settng to 16 bit or preferably 32 bit. If you can do this, then shut down the laptop remove the external monitor and try booting on the LCD display. BPCS
