In your case ,this may be due to two reasons... 1)your reading lens may be having some defects like only responding to dvd`s and not cd`s 2)the cd`s that u used may have been written using digital burning security....... try the same drive in your freinds computer also and check it out

Possible dirty cd laser lens. The CD & DVD lens are different so one may work and not the other. First step would be to try cleaning with a good quality lens cleaner. If it still does not work then it would be cheaper to replace the drive than to try and have the old one repaired. Hope this helps.
Try re-installing your the driver for your dvd rom. Then try to put different dvds and check if it can read from your drive. If problem remains, I suspected it's your dvd rom is faulty
I had similar problem on a Toshiba Satellite A30 laptop, I simply had to reconnect DVD drive. It usually loosing it's connection with motherboard and drive is visible in My Computer but it doesn't recognize any discs. If reconnection does not solve your issue you may try to update your DVD firmware and if it won't help replace DVD drive. Good Luck!
The DVD -R +R means that you can read these types of DVDs that have been created elsewhere, it doesn't mean you can write to your DVD under the format of -R or +R. The CD is a CDRW which means you can read and write to CDs.
I don't think that a factory Satellite P100 has the ability to write to either DVD -R or +R, but to only CDs. I have a P200 that has a DVD -R +R/CDRW and it can't write DVDs. These DVDs you put in are for read only. My Toshiba A215 can but it's a DVDRW/CDRW.
