How to Share your Internet Connection through laptop's WLAN(Wifi) card?


Every Windows Operating System after Windows 98 can share its Internet Connection using this Technique. Microsoft defines this technique as Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). But setting ICS is very obscure to most of the users. This comes very useful if you live with your roommates and you guys have single internet source like a USB modem Connected to one laptop only. Using Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) that laptop can Broadcast its Internet to other laptops in the room. Technically, the range of a laptop's WLAN adapter is around 20-25 meters. So it can easily handle near by rooms also. This can also be done with a PC having a WLAN card.
To setup and broadcast your internet it is mandatory that you are accessing internet using anything other than Your WLAN card like a USB modem, Ethernet etc. This is because your Wireless adapter(WLAN) will be used for Broadcasting your Internet connection to your friends.
Server laptop:- Laptop with Internet Connection.Client Laptop:- Laptops accessing the internet of server laptop.
Follow the steps to share your internet connection..here it goes:--0b73509.gif
  1. Open the "Control Panel" of the laptop that is accessing Internet and go to "Network and Internet" then "Network and Sharing Center".
  2. On the right side of the "Network and Sharing Center" click the "Change Adapter Settings" and you will see all the available network adapters in your laptop.
  3. Now Right-Click the adapter through which you access internet and click "Properties" option. The properties window will open.
  4. In "properies" Window click the "sharing" tab check "Allow other network user to connect through this computer's Internet connection"97ac799.jpg
  5. In the sharing tab, Select "Home networking connection" type as "Wireless Network Connection" click "OK" and select "Yes" to the Confirmation warning. see above image.
  6. Now Right-Click the "Wireless Network Connection" in "Change Adapter Settings"and Open Its Properties.
  7. In "Wireless Network Connection Properties" Double-click the "Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)" and select the "Use following IP address"
  8. Enter the IP address as "192.168.000.001" and "Subnet mask" as "255.255.255.0"
  9. Leave all other fields blank in Server laptop, which has access to internet.0219162.jpg
  10. Now setup a wireless "ad hoc" computer to computer connection using "setup a new connection or network" in "network and sharing center" and Name it as anything like "Internet_sharing".c2debe7.jpg3a69972.jpg
  11. Now bring other laptops that will use the Shared Internet connection.
  12. Open "Change adapter Setting" (Described in step 2).
  13. In "Change adapter settings" Right-click "wireless Network Adapter" and Click its properties.
  14. In "Wireless Network Connection Properties" Double-click the "Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)" and enter following IP address:-
  15. IP address-"192.168.000.002", Subnet mask "255.255.255.0", Default gateway-"192.168.0.001" and Preferred DNS server: "192.168.000.001".
  16. Use the same step from 11 to 15 to connect other laptops and Increase the IP address by +1. Ex- 192.168.0.3, 192.168.0.4 & so on. Rest of the settings like Default gateway etc will be same on all laptops. Only the server laptop will have blank entries in these settings.
  17. Now connect all the laptop with the Wireless network(ad-hoc) named "Internet-sharing" that you had previously broadcasted in step 10 in server laptop.
  18. Now in the server laptop, disconnect and then reconnect the internet connection(This is a necessary step for Internet Connection sharing(ICS) to work).
  19. Now access internet in all laptops...ENjoy.
Note:- For Advance Users.. this information is necessary only--The IP address of server laptop work as the "Default gateway" and Preferred DNS server of Client laptop and on server laptop these fields are blank. Use same series of IP address as used in the server.

The major  causes for a slow Internet connections. A poor-performing connection can be caused by broadband router configuration issues, wireless interference, or any of several other technical issues with your home network. Follow these steps to diagnose slow Internet connections.
 1. Broadband Router Settings
As the centerpiece of a network, a broadband router can be responsible for slow Internet connections if configured improperly. For example, the MTU setting of your router will lead to performance issues if set too high or too low. Ensure your router's settings are all consistent with the manufacturer's and your Internet Service Provider (ISP) recommendations. Carefully record any changes you make to your router's configuration so that you can undo them later if necessary.
 2. Wireless Signal Interference
Wi-Fi and other types of wireless connections may perform poorly due to signal interference, which requires computers to continually resend messages to overcome signal issues. Household appliances and even your neighbors' wireless networks can interfere with your computers. To avoid slow Internet connections due to signal interference, reposition your router for better performance and change your Wi-Fi channel number.
 3. Internet Worms
An Internet worm is a malicious software program that spreads through computer networks. If any of your computers are infected by an Internet worm, they may begin spontaneously generating network traffic without your knowledge, causing your Internet connection to appear slow. Run antivirus software regularly to diagnose and remove these worms from your computers.
 4. Running Background Applications
Some software applications you install on a computer run in the background, quietly consuming network resources. Unlike worms, these are programs designed to do useful work. Peer to peer (P2P) programs in particular can heavily utilize your network and cause connections to appear slow. It's easy to forget these applications are running. Always check computers for any programs running in the background when troubleshooting a slow network.
 5. Faulty Network Equipment
When routers, modems or cables fail, they typically won't support connections. Certain technical glitches in network equipment, however, adversely affect performance even though connections are maintained. To troubleshoot potentially faulty equipment, temporarily re-arrange and re-configure your gear while experimenting with different configurations. Try bypassing the router, swapping cables and changing network adapters to isolate the slow performance to a specific component of the system.
 6. Service Provider Issues
Internet speed ultimately depends on the service provider. Your ISP may change their network's configuration, or suffer technical difficulties, that inadvertently cause your Internet connection to run slow. ISPs may also intentionally install filters or controls on the network that can lower your performance. Don't hesitate to contact your service provider if you suspect they are responsible for a slow Internet connection.

Cannot get the internet to work


That means you probably don't have the password or the Authentication Type set correctly.

For Windows XP below:
Click Start/Control Panel/Network Connections then Right Click on the Wireless Network Connection and select Properties. When the Properties window open click the Wireless Networks tab. Click on the SSID for your wireless network that you connect to and the Properties window will open. You can change the Authentication Type to match the type set in your wireless router and you can also change your password or Network Key to make sure you have it in correctly.

For Windows Vista below:

Click Start/Control Panel/Network and Sharing Center then look to the left of the open window and click Manage Wireless Networks. Find the SSID of the network that you connect to and double click it. When the window opens click the Security tab to change the Security Type (which is the Authentication), The Encryption Type and the Network Security Key (which is the password).

For Windows 7 below:
Click Start/Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network and Sharing Center then look to the left and select Manage Wireless Networks. Find the SSID of the network that you connect to and double click it.   1. Restart the computer.
  2. Test the jack.
  3. Test the equipment.
    1. Try a different jack that you know works.
    2. Try a different cable that you know works.
  4. Check your computer settings.
  5. Renew your IP Address
    1. [x] Windows Vista
      1. Look for your Ethernet card:
        1. Right-click on My Computer from the Start Menu or on the desktop.
        2. Left-click on Properties.
        3. Click on Device Manager on the left side under "Tasks".
        4. Expand the Network Adapters and look for any yellow exclamation points. Make sure a card is listed.
