Firefox bookmarks disappeared

Hi
Just installed the latest version of Firefox, and now all my bookmarks have disappeared and I can't add any new ones either. I was having problems yesterday trying to add sites to my bookmark toolbar, but the ones already there were still showing and working OK. I've tried the troubleshooting suggestions on Firefox, but nothing works.
